Did WG miss the optimum buy/sell 'window' for Mikasa?

Just a thought-

 

For a long while this ship was being super hyped, and then it was released to the other three servers but not NA for reasons already enumerated by Nyx.

 

All the same, while I was originally considering paying the $20 for the package, now that the hype has blown over and we've found the Mikasa to be a rather lackluster tier 2, I am not at all excited for it. Don't get me wrong I'll still get it someday to complete my fleet, but I'm not going to spend a premium amount of $$ just to get it 'first' when it's already been out for months; this is the same reason I'm waiting for a 50% off sale on the Aurora. 

 

I am also starting to feel the same way about the Tirpitz, and this kind of makes me happy, because if others feel the same way and initial sales are lukewarm compared to expectations, maybe they won't do this same stupid delayed marketing ploy again.

"Delayed marketing" is not unique to WG. Anyone with a little knowledge on the subject would know that. In addition, WG wants to make as much $ as possible and make the new guys happy.

I don't know why they can't have an initial weekend offering and then another one in a month or so?

I think you are familiar with the story of that 'rare' tank and how often it was sold after its introduction.

 

It could be that WG in 2015 is a vastly different company, but somehow I doubt it. I realize WoT isn't WoWs but there are no truly rare tanks in that game apart from the accidental sale of that super OP Tier 3 TD.

What I was saying in the OP though is that for me (and this is entirely subjective) I just don't care that much about being the first person to own a Mikasa. At one point when we were getting teased etc. I was on the forums, Reddit, Rita's Status Report trying to find any information I could about the ship, and I was very excited for it. When it was released on the EU server for $20 I thought that was very high but honestly if they had released it at that time I probably would have bought it.

 

Now that it's been out for I think over a month, I just don't care that much anymore. As a Tier II it's more a novelty piece than anything else (most people won't use it as a primary credit earner or a crew trainer), and now that it's been out for so long multiple reviews are out from the other three servers showing just how bad it is. So at this point in time, if they released it tomorrow for $20 in the US with a bunch of stupid things I don't want to buy (premium repair/spotter/sonar consumables, flags I don't care about, overpriced premium time) I'm not going to buy it. And again this is just my opinion, but I think that other people here may share it, and I was hoping that poor sales of the Mikasa might change policy on other sales in the future.

I think the majority of people (myself included) want the Mikasa for historical reasons, especially when the gameplay is known to be sub-par.

So we are now in September... Still waiting... and the only server to have yet to have a sale (bundled or otherwise) for this ship.

 

Can you please put her up for sale WarGaming ?  I can understand delaying the Tirpitz (as you delayed Mikasa), but now it's been more than a month and it's getting a bit ridiculous.

The hype for both has already passed it's peak. IMO, yes they missed the mark...again. The reasons they give for the delays make zero financial sense and are merely a desperate attempt to patch another self inflicted wound. I think they fired people from the wrong department.

Bad performance or not, the Mikasa is interesting enough to be a guaranteed buy for me...as long as it's (unlike the Ishizuchi and Tirpitz ) available for the Doubloons I've already spent hundreds on...

1) Yes, it's been two years since then. In that time, Russia  Independent, Ethnical Russian Nationalists invaded liberated Crimea and have been causing trouble in Ukraine. The rubble value has dropped considerably thanks to international sanctions against Russia. WG trades in USD, so the large and main source of profit that was the Russian server, is not so profitable anymore. WG has been trimming down and closing loopholes in their gold policies. WG is in need of money:

- WoT premium tanks obtained through events no longer reinburse gold if you already have the tank.

- WG is arguably considering closing WoWP (a rumor based on recent ToS changes; but come on, it wouldn't surprise anyone if that happened), a game that no longer gets any new content patches and is maintained mostly to save face.

- Introduction/development of several new premium tanks, some of which are either carbon copies of existing tanks, or downtiered stock tanks:

• T-54 mod 1 (T44 clone), Panther 88 (Panther II)
• Japanese Tiger (Historical, downtiered Tiger)
• Tiger II prototype (not released yet, but it's a stock Tiger II, at T7)
• M4 french heavy (not released yet, scraped out of the remains of the cancelled 2nd french heavy line)
• Scorpion and Kanonenjagdpanzer (not released yet): T7 premiums; both of which, at some point in time, have been tried to be fitted into a T8 slot, due to the larger price the T8 slot means.
• New premiums like 59-Patton, Sherman Revalorizé, which arguably are original.

- Early monetization of WoWS, as far back as the beginning of CBT, which hasn't been THAT long ago, due to rushed timetables. Makes sense, since WoWS was in alpha development for quite long, so WG wanted to start cashing up on its investment as soon as possible.

 

AND, the KV-220, KV-5, Tetrach, PzB2 and the like have returned to sales plenty of times in those two years, some of the sales being plenty recently. Specially the KV-220, which was originally heralded as a "limited" rare tank. Which you could argue it is, because it's only available as bundle. But it has come back so many times that I wouldn't really qualify it as "rare"

 

2) WoWS may not be developed by WG Minsk, but they do answer to WG Minsk. Anything that involves money, WG Minsk is behind it.

 

 

Now, before the WG apologists rage or ignore me, I'm not saying WG/WoT/WoWS is going to die. I'm just pointing the obvious signs of a company tightening its belt. Yes, WG is not the same company it was two years ago: WG now needs to manage their money more closely, and they need more of it to offset diminished returns from the RU server. However, some of their moves feel very desperate and very agressive: "limited", "rare" bundled ships that will come back to sale very often, very overpriced; incomplete account unification. As If they're trying to to squish the consumer out of every cent possible, which I don't like. I'm of the opinion that they could achieve the same or better results if they didn't resort to such tactics and treated its customers better.

Very sensible plan.   I would suspect that the powers that be have said...

 

let's hold everything on the NA server until they see what it's really like, then there's no excuse for people buying it and then threatening class action lawsuits and threatening to leave but not doing so because it's not the uber-win-all that people want but won't get.

 

there will still be wailing and gnashing of teeth, but at least they know before buying it and it's their own fault.
