Why is DD detection so inconsistent?

Like most, I've encountered the dark side of DD stealth, where enemy destroyers have remained invisible, with out smoke, down to ranges of 4KM, often firing with out being detected. Sometimes, in my Nicholas, I'm surprised at how often I can shoot and receive no return fire.

However, the game can also get very wonky in the other direction. I have been under smoke at 7+ km, with my smoke making an enemy cruiser disappear, while they see me, following all my crazy maneuvers trying to shake their shots. I've also had enemy ships spot me at 10+KM, no planes near by, no firing on my part, but they definitely see me and follow my movements.

Is the mechanic just broken? Is there some sort of hack allowing foes to defeat stealth?

The inconsistency is frustrating for DD victims as well as DD drivers themselves.

What ever the issue, it needs to be addressed.

You are being detected by an IJN destroyer that has a much smaller detection radius then yourself. Decent IJN DD players will shadow USN DDs so that their team can destroy them since a IJN DD's biggest threat is a USN DD in a gun duel.

As for being spotted while in smoke, did you keep driving at full speed? The way smoke works you were outrunning the smoke generated and being visible every few seconds.

Also cruisers might  have a consumable to increase detection for them - including in smoke.

That consumable only works up to 3.5km I think.
