Help with Fighter Aircraft, please!

Ok, I'm quite willing to accept I may be doing something wrong, but this getting to be an ongoing issue: My Fighters are the high end ones.  I have the Survivability and Firepower Upgrades installed. And yet, continually, when matched against the SAME carrier, my planes are being wasted, while the enemy loses maybe 1 or 2. wth??? They should be the same damn planes. Am I missing some form of Manual control??

Do you have the upgrades that give more damage and surviability?

Are you attacking them over enemy AA?

If you click on the enemy fighters, it does more damage.

 

Enemy ships nearby might be shooting your fighters with AA

 

Are you having these problems with your Hosho, your Langley, or your Bouge? (Or, is it all 3?)
