Hi. Average player here, trying to improve.

Recently had a Two Brothers Standard battle where we ended up with both teams capping at a very close rate, us being roughly 10 seconds ahead and nearing completion. They had a single returning ship (spotted) to try and decap us. Instead of staying in the cap with 3 other ships I moved out of the cap and fired torpedoes while wandering purposely into view of the returning ship before he was likely to get view of our ships in the cap, hoping that he'd see a juicy DD and try to kill me instead of decapping. While managing to successfully draw his fire for roughly 45 seconds others in the team were trying to get me to return to the cap, but from my understanding having a 4th person in there doesn't help speed it up and him hitting anybody in the cap was likely to make us lose the match.

Is my understanding of the capping system correct?  What are the exact timers/mechanisms the capping system uses for both capping and decapping on Standard game mode?

(Yep, I probably should have gone looking for this information much sooner.)

Thank-you to anyone who helps.

You only need two ships in the cap to achieve the maximum capture rate.  Needing three is from World of Tanks which has very different requirements for capping.  You made the right call, and were being a great team player.

From the WOWS Wiki:

Standard: each team has a base, displayed on the minimap as blue and red circles with a flag in the center. The objective is to sink all enemies or capture their base. Sailing into the enemy base starts the capture, taking 180 seconds. A second capper will half the time down to 90 seconds. Each second spent in the enemy base is counted as a "capture point" in game. Taking damage will cause you to lose half of your capture points.

Right, having more than 2 ships in the cap spreads out the cap points among the ships, but the speed of capture doesn't increase beyond the second.  So with you leaving the cap with 3 others still inside would have lost the points gained by you since you entered cap but the speed of cap afterwards won't increase.

Being a target for an enemy ship trying to reduce cap points was probably the right thing to do... unless leaving the cap would reduce your team's cap points to below the enemy's.

IIRC, it's 3 minutes to cap solo, 1:30 min to cap with two or more.

Also on another note... entering your own cap while enemies are capping will stop the cap on all modes, unlike tanks.

I had a past game where enemy was about a second or two away from capping on Two Brothers... I sailed my Battleship through the middle channel and got on the cap just in time to halt it.  Shot some ships,  my secondaries shot some ships, and timer was totally reset by the time help came along.

It sounds to me like you did the right thing. One thing I'll add though is that it can be advantageous to have extra people in the cap, especially if the other team didn't observe who entered first.  This means that the other team has a bigger chance of not hitting the ship that has most of the cap points.  It's going to be very situational, but if there's nothing else more useful you can be doing this is sometimes a good idea.
