Alternate steering changed?

This is NOT a auto collision thing. I have tried with auto-collision both on and off, same thing happens. Here's what's happening:

I HATE using letter keys for steerage, all games not just this one. I use the arrow keys for directional control and speed control (up/down =faster/slower, left arrow/right arrow = turning). Previously this worked just fine, no problems. Hit right arrow, ship adjusts a bit, then back to straight ahead. Hold down arrow to continue turning. Today it is locking with audible click for each tap of the arrows. Two taps =hard turn locked in place. Must double tap opposite arrow to return to straight or 3-4 taps to go opposite direction, all with audible clicking.  Have tried with default reset then using the arrows in main key slots, arrows in secondary key slots, no change the locking. It's ruining my game having to turn from screen to check left hand layout constantly.

Is this a change in the game? How do I turn this crap stuff off? This water is cold and I am seeing sharks circling....never a rescue team available in war zone...glubglubglub

You missed the point...yesterday was different than today...although obviously you know how everyone else SHOULD be...and comprehension is a learned skill apparently. Arrow keys work as it is in every game I have played since PC's have been around. For me arrows are a lot easier than wasd, I claim not to know what's best for any other on the entire planet.

Dude... You do not need to be rude to me when I was just cracking wise with a joke. EVERYONE is different... Besides clones with a brain spike that is. But anyways a simple tapping of my Q and E is the turn lock for me and the way to unlock it is a simple click of it again so I do not know how it is locking. Your arrow keys could be sticky so to speak, needs a small dusting, you could try another keyboard if your on a desktop or a USB input keyboard, etc... Otherwise delete your preferences and or re install your game... These are the tips I can give yah.

Sorry If yah took my joke the wrong way. Seesh.

Apologies to you also, suggest the developers install sarcasm font 5 and joking around font aerial.

Anyway, it's not my keyboard. Audible game sound on turns: click, clickclick thing. Still does it after deleting Preferences file and restarting the game only control changes being turning off auto-collision, advanced combat to on, and the wasd to arrows. Playable as a BB but DD =Dead as a Door nail.

little grey screen items popup and fadeout also, overlay of 1/2, full and rt/lf when use a right or left arrow. And the turn locks into those 1/2 or full positions with the grey pointer staying pointed at the 1/2 or full.

Edit: It is doing this from both my Laptop and Desktop. Something changed in game, putting arrows for port/starboard is acting more like changing the 2 slots in settings for Q/E. Will try putting arrows in those 2 slots and see if that works. /shrug

Yep, the 2 slots above work now. Did those get swapped and the binds not follow? My preferences from previous play stayed but the actions and subsequently the slots changed as the game acts differently on input today from previous days.

It's funny but I think about all the minorities in the world that have cried discrimination throughout the years, and some rightfully so, that one of the most populated minorities is still discriminated against: Left-handers.

Anyway, I'm a Lefty too and therefore always re-bind my keys. I played at first and had issues because my steering was using fixed angles as well and I had to constantly monitor my rudder and was always over-turning. I finally discovered the error and it was the keys I had bound to left/right arrows.

The functions in the binds list "Port" and "Starboard" are the ones that are fixed angles that you have to manually change. The ones labeled "Hard to Port" and "Hard to Starboard" are the ones that simple steer temporarily and return to center when released. It sounds like these got swapped, if I am understanding you. It is easy to make this error because of the way they've sectioned off the controls. The ones that dynamically steer are listed under the heading "Movement" while the forward, reverse, fixed left, and fixed right are under "Cruise Control". These four being grouped together leads you to bind these as your preference. I think they should all be listed under "Ship Movement" and have descriptions like:

Speed Up

Speed Down

Steer Port (left)

Steer Starboard (right)

Fix Rudder Port

Fix Rudder Starboard

This, I believe, would be more clear.

Another issue I've noticed is that the key you bind (at least some) to "Port" under Cruise Control does not stay. I have gone back at least half a dozen times and noticed it blank and re-bound it.

If you are having issues I haven't covered, it may be necessary to delete your "preferences.xml" file in the root WoWs folder and re-do all your settings. I had progressed through Tier 4 before I was able to use the 'Ctrl' key to ping the mini-map and other functions related to the key because it simply did not work. Resetting the default binds did not fix it. Only by deleting the "preferences.xml" file did this get fixed.

I would lightheartedly suggest that you move your mouse to the left side of the keyboard and use your right hand on the ASWD keys and tell me it's very easy. Then you'd be doing it how you suggest we do it. You will then realize it's a different thing. Ergonomically, this arrangement is very awkward. It isn't the same for right-handed people.

My brothers a lefty... *Ba dum Tssssss.*

Jokes aside. As I mentioned above it was a little joke. Btw there is no such thing a being a left hand racist...Well... Unless your a Nun *Grabs Ruler* :3

But yeah I have tried that growing up and failed a typing test for doing that when I was young trying to get the teachers mad lol.

It is no biggie how you use your controls as long as you play. I just thing IMO it would be easier. But your preferences and opinions are not mine.

I realize you meant no ill towards the OP, but if you've had to hear this a hundred times in games and forums, you begin to feel like any other minority who is told just to "adjust" to society. And there are more types of discrimination than racism. I also used "lightheartedly" in my comment so you'd know I wasn't bashing you. It is difficult in text to convey a person's meaning sometimes.

To illustrate this to those who don't get it, I've made this informative pic. Perhaps people will understand that our plight goes beyond guns, golf clubs, and other things :)

The settings file seems to get corrupted sometimes when changing settings.  One solution is just to go into the game folder and delete the preferences file.  Then you will have to reassign the keys you like from scratch.

Sounds to me like your arrow keys got reassigned somehow.

Thanks for the input guys. Also having some inconsistencies having hooked up my old Wingman Extreme joystick with left side only locking, like hit the q but holding down opposite turn only brings it back to 0, not over to starboard. Would be really fun to play Destroyers with the joystick using trigger and various other thumb controlled buttons. (hint hint Devs, recommend that mouse button but lemme change dangit!) As it is, still easier to use the buttons for AP/HE and torpedo spread. (the above referenced joystick has 4 clicky buttons, a 4-way button and trigger on the stick, a slide throttle and 2 buttons on base. Can see how useful for faster DD type action it could be. Oh, it has twist functions too for more program-ability...if only /sigh) Was fun using laptop in living room hooked up to 60" TV kicked back in recliner mouse on right arm, stick on left, laptop in lap.

Gonna chalk some of this up to Microsoft as I am getting tons of "stuff" from them thar winders updates with Windows 10 release/updated. The arrow keys have straightened out and started acting right.
