Which shell type destroys turrets more often?

This is a question I've often wondered.  It would seem that HE is the best shell choice for destroying secondary guns and AA emplacements, but I still can't figure out which type is better for destroying enemy main guns.

Since I mainly play BB, I'm assuming that HE will be enough to blow up lighter turrets like those found on the Atlanta.  Will aiming higher with my AP let me trade citadels for destroyed turrets on enemy Battleships?

Thanks!

AP destroys all turrets faster. regardless of type.

cause it pens the turret armor and destroys it liek a citadel.

HE does splash dmg.  so it hits turrets more.  but doesnt destroy as often.

HE usually "disables" them more often than destroys

while AP destroys more often than disables.

for HE, it will only be noticed when hittign weak turrets. or 1 turret repeatedly.  or when using a BB caliber gun

for AP. strong, weak, don't matter. you pen it. its going to take massive dmg.

BUT

low caliber guns like DD and some cruisers(aka all but 203mm guns)  AP is not enough to pen turrets.  so they need HE to dmg it slowly.  as their AP wont pen and thus wont do dmg.

It's funny. I think if you want basic module damage, DOT's and reliable...at least something damage - you gotta go HE. Personally I notice far more things damaged with HE. AP is for when you wanna 'go for it' and land that big citadel.

I've wiped out DD turrets with low caliber HE. They may have a chance to not be fully destroyed by HE hits, but I don't think it really matters that much.

If a shell directly hits the turret, it's likely done. Splash from HE seems to be how temporarily disabling them happens.

5" AP is enough to take out Cleveland guns at 5km. It's usually easier to snipe the guns than the citadel on the Cleveland.

Ok, so the turret takes penetration damage, and so AP will kill turrets more often.

Got it.

BB's must have massive turret health then, as I rarely lose a gun in a duel.  Neat!

I think the best answer is 'theoretically'.  If you primarily drive battleships, I would never aim AP at turrets for two reasons:

1. You're not accurate enough.  If you miss the turret, but still hit the ship your AP round isn't going to do much.

2. If you nail a turret, you've taken out two or three of his guns.  If you nail a citadel, you generally take between 1/3 and 2/3 of his HP - and that gets you a lot closer to taking out ALL of his guns.

Unfortunately this is the truth, most of the time I just shoot for underneath the stacks to get citadels.

the difference between disabling and destroying a turret is related to penetration.

if you've got a big enough gun, and your target's armor is low enough, you can penetrate enemy ship's turrets with only HE... which will destroy the turret.  but against something with armor where you can't get an HE penetration, then your HE will only disable the turret, while your AP can destroy it.

its sorta like how against a carrier or a destroyer, in a battleship, and even most cruisers, you can get citadel penetrations using HE, because the armor on CV's and DD's is so low that HE can penetrate, unlike against cruisers and battleships, where their armor is strong enough that you can't get a penetration without using AP.

BB gun turrets also have massive amounts of armor, even more than the belt.

Prime Example: Yamato.

Her Turrets are MUCH tougher to pen than her Citadel.

Yep, usually turrets are the most armored part of a ship. Because IRL it doesn't end as a mere turret destruction.

Possibly. Shells penning the gun house can just blow up the turret and not get to the mags-- they're bulkheaded off. (Note, in game, Turret Criticals CAN/DO trigger Detonation! if the pen would ignite the mags and the opposing ship doesn't have Juliet Charlie)

Turrets are very heavily armored to 1: keep the guns combat capable. 2. survive their own firing [this is why frontal facings are beastly thick-- see Yamato which had 26" front facing turret armor- 9 almost 10 inches thicker than the armor protecting the magazines below the turret]-- the blowback from firing would warp lighter armor and eventually destroy (or render incapacitated) the turret. [The 16/50s on the Iowas for example used 600lbs high explosive smokeless powder as their firing charge- the pressure wave alone could kill a man within a few yards of the guns when they fire-- similarly, its documented at some 17 yards is/was incredibly dangerous on Yamato]

One time I saw a Baltimore with all of it's turrets destroyed. we had line of sight for 30s and wasn't shooting at me. Then I saw it's turrets. That was pretty funny.

I had a game where a New Mexico knocked out the two front turret of my North Carolina with two volleys. And that was at around the 14min mark, I was pretty pissed.

Back before 0.3.1 in CBT, I saw a Fuso with no turrets and more than half his secondaries were gone.

He kept yelling in chat for someone to kill him.

...No one did.  Won the battle by cap within the last 20 seconds.

Maybe, I dunno. He never got close to our ships, which all lemming trained to the other side of the map, blew up their CV and got the cap.

Were I him, I'd have sailed straight to the cap.

Despite being an overblown Naval Ram, he probably could've won the game, or at the very least got his death wish had he just tried to solo cap.
