Curious: why the difference in manual torp drops IJN vs. USN?

As per the title, why the difference in spread patterns between manual drops between USN and IJN torpedo planes?

The USN pattern is a tight rectangle whereas the IJN pattern on manual drops is exactly the same as automatic drops (kind of an 'arc').

Anyone know the reasoning behind this? Or is it just a 'Beta' version difference the devs haven't corrected?

US gets better spread because they get less TBs in the air at basically every tier. So balance, basically. IJN CVs were ludicrously overpowered despite the worse spread while US were average at best until the final few tiers.

The devs stated that they eventually want IJN torp drops to converge but are having trouble implementing it due to engine or something.

Why is that you can see the convergent "X" in the official overview video of Aircraft Carriers?

Wrong.

Japan only gets four planes per squadron, while the US gets six.

False,

And the US carriers only got one squad until the last couple tiers where the IJN carriers had 3 squads. 4*3=12 > 6*1=6

Yeah, but that still doesn't explain why a SQUADRON with fewer planes has a much WIDER spread pattern.

And the US carrier still has OTHER airplanes in addition to only that one TB squadron.

You also missed the higher damage of the USN torpedoes.  Also longer range on the USN torpedoes; can drop outside of the range of the innermost guns if necessary.

Hmm, in this video it looks like one torpedo on the right side goes straight, but the leftmost torpedoes on the drop make the "X" shape.  Is this the issue that they're having trouble with?  I believe it to be a manual drop on a Supertest Server.

Japanese carriers in CBT dropped the same as American spread. That was too OP and nerfed into the fan pattern.

Ah well, that 'splains it.

Just makes it easier to play an IJN carrier. No having to sweat your aim. :teethhappy:

For comparison, here's from CBT. Pretty small and terrifying.

I remember that perfectly, it even scared me while playing the CV itself. With 3 squads there was no way a BB could survive but right now you will get on average 2 torps per squad

With the changes to planes I would hope wargaming puts the torp spread back down on IJN so that their spread is the same. No reason why not to.

I haven't got 3 out of 4 torps to hit from an IJN TB, ever. At best its 2, due to how wide the torps are and their speed.

Also, most targets tend to evade as well.

But on USN TB, I've gotten 5 out 6 often. With 4 out of 6 being common.

So basically 1 USN TB = 2 IJN TB for torp hits, but USN torps do more damage.

Something to ponder about.

US = 4 second arm time / narrow spread / slow speed / long range / high damage / long reload / single group

IJN = 3 second arm time / wide spread / fast speed / short range / low damage / fast reload / many groups

Pretty much this. People don't mention it because it is the NA server!

1 US TB is not nearly as good as two IJN. Stats made it clear that those 12 TB loadouts were ludicrously overpowered compared to the US 6 you get forever.

Other than the massive screaming balance issue you mean?

IJN CV are already the most OP line in the game, there is no way they have any buffs coming their way, just a long string of nerfs to bring them down to earth.

I meant squad, not planes.

1 USN squad can often get in 4 torp hits.

1 IJN squad can often get in 2 torp hits.

Note that its nearly impossible for an IJN torp squad to land 3 or 4 hits but it happens often on USN squad to land 5 and rarely 6 hits.

Thus, the 1 squad USN CV get until tier 9, is worth 2 IJN squad. The reason IJN did more damage, was due to the 3rd squad.

The "nerf" to 2 squad is going to make them on-par, or slightly inferior due to the better torp damage USN get as well as more damaging dive bombers.
