Is the Atalanta worth the 40 dollars it costs?  I do not have a premium yet and it is the only USN currently available.  Sorry in advance if this has been previously covered.

Atlanta has the lowest average dmg at tier 7 with onyl 19k....compared to 30k+ for normal cruisers and 40k+ for BBs

however, its fun. and excells at killng DDs.  and cruisers(provided you get close enough to coutner your slow shel speed)

but its got low caliber.  and will fail to hurt BBs unless it can cause a fire (with 5% fire chance, its less than half that of the next lowest)

for a good review

and personally. i love Atlanta.  its unique, its fun.   its the best AA/anti DD/ anti cruiser ship of its tier.

and even with its massive weakness against BBs.   its something no one ignores.

it has torps. one of 3 USN cruisers to have those (the torps suck. low range and long reload.  but people underestimate those torps at the cost of their lives!)

and the sheer rof of it means that while its dmg vs BBs is horrible.  its psycological factor is epic.  when someone sees hundreds of shots coming in non stop. they flee.  as they think they are taking more dmg than they actually are.

go to this thread for an epic review (mouse is good at those)

Absolute trash... It can only rain HE hell down on it`s opponents and be the bain of every DD driver and HE hater in existence... It also has torps so it`s distinctly un-American and so that more things you have to handle on this bad ship.

in all honesty it`s a great ship. If you want it, it is definitely worth the investment

Now the Atago... That is a horrible ship

Insert shameless self-promo and Atago promo here:v

Atlanta is a really fun ship. I will be buying it (again) once it goes on sale for the first time. :playing:

Thank you for the input guys.  :honoring: I will likely be getting it soon.  I am only at tier 3 ships so I don't want to jump into higher tier battles till my skills are up there.

VERY good idea and it will pay off big time. I am glad to hear someone say this and wish 99% of premium ship buyers had this same mentality.

If you are going to buy a premium buy the Murmansk.  Hella OP, crazy range and sets fire like Drew Barrymore in Firestarter. (lets see how many of you get that reference)

Before you buy it, be grateful that you're not Canadian and that it doesn't cost $53 CAD.

But yes, it is a fun little ship.

Oh god... I had to buy my Atago for $65... Gotta love our dollar value ATM. I remember having to scrounge up all my old pre-paid cards just be able to get it...

I had an Atlanta in closed Beta and it was one of my first aquisitions when we went to open beta.  I highly recommend it.  Several have commented the Atlanta is the bane of DD's, entirely true.  The rate of fire is incredible, you can get off a second volley before the first impacts.  Its also a great AA Escort for CV's and lower tier BB's as it has dual purpose armament.  In its consumables, there is a  set of headphones for some sort of sonar.  It seems to be a default. While in port -> Modules, click on those stuipd headphones (might be a right click).  A drop down menu will appear.  Choose the 2nd Anti-Aircraft consumable and then select Auto Renew (Thats not the exact wording but you'll see the selection).  That will cause a set of cross hairs with a plane in them to appear with your ammunition selection, damage control, etc... icons at the bottom of the screen when the ship is in battle.

When you get into a battle with 1 or 2 CV's against you, rejoice!  come in close to your CV or BB of choice, let the captain know you are the AA escort.  When you see the planes coming for you, click those cross hairs when they get close,  "Close" is under 3-4 KM and you are CERTAIN they are gunning for the ship you are escorting.  The Atlanta's AA fire when the planes start their attack is murderous; better than a Cleveland, IMHO as I have one.  Over the course of one game, my Atlanta shot down 35 planes launches from a pair of T8 carriers heading for two BB's.  I was very close to one of the ships I was escorting, like... 200 meters.

"If it flies, it dies."  The sky rained shot up planes.

I enjoy ship reviews on YouTube uploaded by "The Mighty Jingles."  Perhaps you will also find it useful:

Atlanta can be very situational, with its short ranged guns.  Excellent for keeping planes and DDs off someone.  Also good for ambushing someone who's focused in on a teammate in the other direction.

Low damage per individual shot, but since you're firing so many shots, it adds up quickly.   As a plus, the sight of many, many shells coming at someone can cause panicked, almost frantic dodging.

Keep in mind, the torps are ludicrously short ranged, and you have the armor of a DD on a CL hull.  Everything can penetrate your armor, and your weakpoints are much easier to hit than a DD.  Get targeted and you  will take damage, and quickly.

Very true, Nightmare.  Atlanta seems to attract damage.  It gets turrets knocked out very quickly.  Since you have 16 guns, loosing 1 or 2 is not that great a loss but still, Atlanta is a best, fragile.  Be prepared to either maneuver or die quickly.

The rate of fire makes up for its fragility, IMHO.

I think it needs some minor buffs. The point of the premium ships is to earn accelerated Captain/free XP and Credits. So far, on average, I'm finding that the bonuses in those areas just barely compensate for the under performance of the ship. i.e., the Cleavland is a better credit earner for me, in spite of the premium bonus on the Atlanta!

It's already fragile enough with the low armor values and broad citadels. There is no reason for it also to have such low HP for the Tier. I was able to play smart in most matches and do fairly well. The open ocean map? Forget about it. Also, I had one match where  battleship at 14+ KM was able to kill me with a single salvo by wrecking my citadel, which occurred during the very brief period at which I took a shot while moving from one island to another for cover. About a minute into the match. Getting one shotted is never fun, less so when you paid a premium for the ship. Even less so because I've never been one shotted in anything except a DD, and that only occurred once in hundreds of matches.

I also should probably get a minor boost to speed and maneuverability. Giving it DD level protection, short firing range and relatively poor speed, maneuverability seems over kill. I don't mind having to rely on skill to get good results from a glass cannon, but the inability to dodge anything, or outrun anything, makes it a lot more frustrating to play.

It's not bad. However, as pointed out, if I buy a premium to earn credits and train commanders, I don't want to end up feeling that the ship I bought has been balanced down to completely negate the benefit of the XP and credit bonuses!
