Destroyers just appearing with a barrage of stealth torpedos

I'm sailing around in my win rate murdering Phoenix IV (my WR was 65%, started using Phoenix and now its under 30%.. lol). Anyway there are 2 enemy cruisers around 10k away that I was duelling with when all of a sudden I get the warning 'Torpedos dead ahead', immediately followed by 'torpedos to port', I had around 2 seconds warning and no time to avoid, took a screenie just before I went boom, 2 enemy destroyers were within 5k of me (one was under 4, yet my blind crew could not see them, torpedos just appeared, and the rest is another case of 'wahhhh this game pisses me the f#### right off!!!!' Ridiculous a 80m long ship can just turn on some stealth field generator (or smoke..) and ram home a game ending barrage of death.

That's the beauty of destroyers. If you see a destroyer, turn from the get go...

 

Of course... Unless you're up against me... All you'll see is a bunch of torpedoes appear out of nowhere... :hiding:

See the smoke around the DD's in the picture?  That means you turn away when it appears, as they will not light up in that.

 

Be careful to not get tunnel visioned onto one ship or two, when their are DD's around.  You are better to disengage in that situation.

Meh.. I just not finding this game fun any more, to much torpedo and aircraft spamage, bad team mixes and frustration so I deleted it. When (or if..) if ever leaves beta I'll have another go.

 

 I think that 6 days of continuous 1 sided losing streaks has put me off the most

I understand the tactics Destroyers use, and I get how all the visibility mechanics work...

 

However, I've had similar experiences with Destroyers remaining unspotted, in clear seas, far inside their supposed detection range. And, it seems torpedos are even more undetectable, because I've had torpedos come out of "nowhere" without a warning until it's too late for me to maneuver.

 

Generally, I'm aware of what's going on around me, so this has been quite a surprise...

Not to insult, but you approached this situation all wrong. You are in a Phoenix, one of the fastest cruisers available with quite a decent armament. Couple this with the new (new at tier 4) hydroacoustic search skill and you have a cruiser that outright bullies destroyers. Your first issue is you are too close without using the hydroacoustic search skill. If you are planning to fight destroyers close like that, you need all the advantage you can get to avoid well placed torpedoes well before they are within range to be a threat. Which brings me to my second point, unless those destroyers were very skilled (and lucky) and simply guessed exactly where you would maneuver, it doesn't look like you were taking evasion action while approaching. Third point, I wouldn't recommend taking on more than 1 destroyer at a time. It can be very difficult to avoid multiple torpedo salvos fired simultaneously in 2 different incoming directions. Generally, pub players aren't this coordinated, but in the screenshot you can clearly see torpedoes incoming from port and bow, which essentially forces you to brake and turn hard to port in order to avoid the most damage. i love how people complain about these torpedoes,usually in the war you never saw the torpedoes that hit your ship, you just exploded, and if it was a sub, you are really caught off guard, especially japanese ship based torpedoes that ran on oxygen

Holy molly!! you sailed straight line to a smoke screen and didnt use your detecting consumable. Always steer away from smoke screens please

Soooo... not only did you sail in a straight line.. but you also headed at a smoke screen near the start of a battle and ahead of the rest of your team and didn't use hydroacoustic.  Why exactly were you surprised by getting a bunch or torps in your face.  No one is at fault here but you, you made several obvious mistakes.  You honestly have no right to get mad at the game either, the fault there was completely on you.

Ship launched torpedoes are the hardest weapon to use, because their success relies entirely on your opponent either screwing up or paying no attention whatsoever.

 

You got torpedoed because you were sailing in a straight line with a steady speed, and you paid no attention to all the signs of DD's being in the area.

Died because you messed up, blame game mechanics. I'm not sure what you expected out of the giant smoke cloud most, but it was either tentacles or torpedoes.

At least they don't take 8 months to fix long standing balance issues in the game and release new stuff. The 4.1 patch is finally fixing things in this game, only took WG a large part of a year to do it.

You're right: Gaijin has never fixed longstanding issues with it's game.

 

The game has enormous potential, but the game balance is completely screwed up, and they are basically ignoring scumbags who abuse the ULQ graphics to cheat, as well as spawn killers.

 

I occasionally go back, and then almost immediately leave again because of how bad the gameplay is.

As far as I know only tier 5 tanks have some balance issues. And the general stance I take on spawn camping in any game is don't be bad enough to get spawn camped. I still find the tanks fun, don't play a lot because I spend my time on other games though.

 

And of course they don't have any real competition in aircraft battles. WoWP was a failure for many reasons that WG themselves fully understands.

 

Either way 8 months is a very protected development cycle for not very complicated changes. At least they aren't as bad as Riot (LoL) I guess, they have worked on features for years and still haven't finished them. Mainly because the game coding is the worst thing ever known to mankind, I swear at this point they just need to rewrite the whole game from the start.

If so, then all ammo should be limited. You can't change things just because you can't deal with the tactics of countering DD's.

 

My hit ratio is 10% overall, with the Minekazi using the fast 7km torpedoes it is 13%. Probably 90% of the time I become visible at some point in the attack run, there is plenty of time to dodge if you pay attention to your surroundings.

 

I just started playing BB's, it wasn't until my 33 game did I get sunk by torpedoes from a DD. I was attacked by 2 clemson's and 2 torpedo bomber squadrons at the same time. Since I pretty much had torpedoes coming at me from all points of the compass, I was doomed. It was a well coordinated strike and my hat is off to the team. After playing cruisers and DD's so much it gave me the knowledge on how to limit the threat posed by torpedoes.

 

1. Adjust speed varying between 1/2 and full.

2. Change course frequently

3. Keep eye on mini-map

4. Don't spend all your time looking through your sight

5. Don't chase DD's

6. Don't enter the rocks and narrow passages

7. Don't sail alone, stay with other ships

8. When torps are near, slow down as you turn.
