How do you apply metagaming to WOWS?

OK before you roast me, I have been playing online for a long time (back to the old Delta Force FPS), I'm an older player 50+, and I try to constantly improve my game no matter what type of game it is. My ego is not big.

I understand the meta concept but would love to hear form you guys as to how you apply it to the game. I may be doing it right, I may be doing it wrong, but I want to improve. All criticism and advice will be considered constructive. I have no problem with my CA's but need a little more than mere strategy on the BB's and DD's

Thanks!

Ship driving is all About patience as opposed to reaction time. Wait for the right shot and take it. Filling the sky with rounds versus firing 25% slower and doing more damage, the choice should always be slower fire. Don't be too slow and skip a whole load cycle though.

Well here is one area I defintely need to work on then. I am basically firing all of the time at anything that is in range. Doesn't matter if I'm in a CV or BB. Guilty.

Er...reading between the lines...Meta sucks the fun out of the game? It looks like most of the better players (i do check stats) seem to embrace the meta theme and still have fun?

meta is about choice. So the meta is going to revolve around what nations ships fit the idea of supporting 1 cv and 2 bb the best and what nations ships are suited for being those BB and CV. It's probably going to be IJN IJN IJN. Though some USN CL might be popular too maybe USN DD for their DD hunting abilities.

Then there are module and captains choices - I'm sure everyone will run the same setups on those too - range - ROF - and damage mitigation.

And to me this is what makes it so thrilling.  You have to wait for reloads and angles and if anything comes your way you do your best but you just have to take it. Oh this is gonna hurt!

While the pace may be slow, it goes to stark raving terror in an instant.  I'm like" OMG,  reload, turn, fire go out, aaahhhh, exposed my side, ahhhhh turn, turn  shoot, look, shoot, look, torps ready, damn friendly turned a 180 into the path of my torps, ohh cra..., aaaahhhh!"  blub blub blub.

Winning is fun

If you have a long reload wait for a good shoot

If I am in the Atlanta... Expect to see the steel rain

One thing

Learn how the ship you are in SHOULD be run

Things change from tier top tier in the same tree

And BBs do NOT FREAKING GO INTO ISLANDS TO DUEL DDs

You all have seen that

For BB's:

- Put no more than a 30 degree angle between you and the ship shooting at you. This will allow their shells to ricochet or bounce off of you and do no damage.

- You don't always have to shoot a full broadside

- Don't show the enemy your broadside

- Maneuver inbetween rounds.. you have 30 seconds and any speed / course change will throw off incoming shells / torpedoes

- Don't ever stop, unless it's to go backwards because you ran aground (It makes it easier for the enemy to hit you)

- Don't sit on the edge of the map in Domination mode... because the other team will cap you out

- Don't concentrate on one ship... look around inbetween rounds to see if there is a more urgent target (I've seen allot of players not kill a 200 HP ship and just tunnel vision on the 5k HP ship they've been shooting at for the last 5 minutes)

For DD's

- Know your detection ranges before you enter battle

- Know your gun / torpedo ranges (If in battle you can hold cntl key and hover over your ammo to see)

- Use smoke wisely.. it may hide your ship for a few, but it also lets the entire enemy team know there is a DD over there

- Shooting your guns negates your concealment advantage.. so don't shoot at anything unless you are already detected

- Patience & practice

Well it seems I am playing some sort of meta game. I do almost all of these things in both ship classes. I have to say though making a mistake in a BB is much harder to correct than any other ship. To me it is the hardest ship to drive correctly.

Are you constantly firing in your BB form long range or do you close to a distance of 12-15 km before letting lose?

I don't think everybody agrees on what "meta" means.  I've always looked at it as knowing/guessing what other players will be doing, not just general in-game knowledge.  For instance, in card games it's not just knowing how to play your deck, it's knowing what the popular decks are right now and planning which deck you'll use based on what you're likely to encounter.  The meta evolves over time and is part of the reason I'm not good at card games like Hearthstone even if I enjoy them.  I want to learn a certain play style and perfect it, instead of having to evolve with a new meta every couple of weeks.  Two examples for WoWS:

  • The game is very cruiser-heavy right now.  Some can interpret that battleships suck and cruisers are a jack-of-all-trades that can nuke battleships with HE and fires.  I interpret it by believing that it's a great time to be a good battleship player that can AP all the cruisers.
  • Each map has it's own meta that evolves over time.  Players get into a routine of who goes where and get used to it, and then slowly start trying to go elsewhere to counter the meta movements, which slowly evolves as players begin going elsewhere.  When I first started playing Ice Islands, the main fight happened in the southeast near the cluster of small icebergs.  Now most of the time, players seem to play in the upper-left middle area.  As players adapt to where their enemies commonly go, they'll attempt to find better places to position themselves at the start of a match, which will slowly influence the way that any given map tends to play out.

Depends on the target & situation. Allot of players get antsy and start shooting at long range at the beginning of the game with no real hope of hitting anything. All this does is give away your position. Half the game is about positioning, being at the right place at the right time and not being detected. Watching the mini map is a big key, just because you're at area C shooting BB's doesn't mean you shouldn't be watching what's going on with that CA or DD in Area B.

Engage at a range that YOU can reliably hit at. Doesn't help if you fire volley after volley at 20km and hit nothing.

The whole concept of a "metagame" has ruined online gaming in my very humble opinion... And I've been online gaming since the 90s.

Care to expand on this?

Meta always exists, if you talk about it or not.  So usually by the second time anyone plays anything, be it a card game, sports, board game, or computer game, there is some level of metagaming going on.  Good players typically recognize this immediately and take advantage of it to win.

I have to say I agree with this 100%. You instinctively (or evidently not for some) know this and use it in all kind of situations in life..not just gaming.
