Terrain in World of Warships

.

You have 4 terrain types in World of warships, though 3 of them are not what you would consider terrain, yet for all practical effects they are.  Islands and land masses are the obvious terrain.  The not so obvious is weather (which is not yet in game per say.. though I think we do have visibility effects fog, low light etc) DIstance, Distance, and  time.  Distance and time are intertwined.  the two factor change depending upon the battlespace.  The larger the map, the greater the effect.

Terrain is an obstacle to movement, and attack.  Island represent blocking terrain for ships.  You must go around them.  And you cannot shoot through them.

Time, and distance also have the exact same effect.. if your are sufficiently distant from any one particulay enemy then you are immune from attack.  ideally you arrange your manuvers in such a way that you can attack from outside their range, or at least to where it is more difficult to be hit, then to be hit.  The time to cross a distance to reach the enemy it a very important factor.  How often you seen someone in trouble, out numbered and out gunned, and with no one who can get there to take some of the heat off before they are destroyed?    It's pretty common to see happen.

Terrain has no concern, it can be helpfull, or harmfull deending on how it is used or not used.  This is in no way like terrain in world of tanks.  Stopping your ship in world of warships only makes you that much easier of a target to hit. hiding behind an island is good, hiding non moving behind an island is bad.  Ships accelerate slowly, and tend to start at around 150 to 300 feet in length even for destroyers.  Hiding is... difficult. It can be done, but the bigger your ship, the more difficult it is.  Some ships are sufficiently small that they can hide in the open due to the nature of spotting mechanics in the game.  But there are a number of way that can reveal and pin point your location at a long distance... Gun fire come to mind.  This can be seen/heard a great distance.  Make that first shot count.. ALLWAYS.. because the moment you take it,  assume everyone knows where you are.

Always be aware of distances, and the time it take to move those distances.  Not only for your self, but for your opponents to also move from a to B.  Study the maps..look at where islands grant a tactical boon by providing cover or at least limited exposure.

When pursuing an enemy, its better to move to where they will be, then to simply chase them.  And it generally take less time, and you travel less distance when you intercept as apposed to pursuing.

Time and distance also factor in on generating misses when your fired at from a distance.   Your a cruisers lets say an Aoba, with your 6 fairly fast firing 203's.. You have a Wyoming at range..your faster and she cannot break contact other then through ducking behind an island.  SHe doesn't have the spped to run away.  She does how ever have the fire power to kill you with one salvo.

The tactic here is simple in the extreem, though execution takes practice. Its partially luck, and partially minipulation your opponent into firing where you will not be. This can be done fairly easily.  Moving back and forth between full throttle and half throttle to throw off thier lead.  zig zagging constantly with the A and D keys weaviing slightly back and forth.. and keep this random.. if you get prdictable, you will die.

What your doing it using the distance, and the time not only between reloading, but also the time it take the shell to land.  In those few seconds your ship will have moved depending apon the ship, one to several ship lengths.  Treat incoming shells like torpedo's.  Turn into or away from them, accelerate or chop throttle.  Do not be where they are when they arrive.  You may still get hit, you may drive right into a salvo that you would have avoided had you not manuvered.  But the most likely occurance with be you generateing multipule misses.   You have seen destroyers do it, well, Cruisers and battleships can do it also, though admittadly Battleships are not exactly know for the bob and weave.  But that is why they carry the heavy armor!

Time and distance are a terrain that directly effect combat.  Where ability dealing with this particular type of terrain is usefull in the understanding of it in a fight between two persons, its in the arena of group tactics and team combat where ability in thise areas shine.  Player and teams that maintain an awareness of it are going to be very difficult to beat.  Their cavalry always shows up on time!

Develop an awareness of how time and distance it effect your battle.  Use your knowledge of it to plan your movements.  Alway be aware of how long it takes enemy ships to move against you, and how distant they are, and where they are going. Because of the fixed boarders of the battle space no one get to run away.  Eventually you can catch anyone, or better yet, let them catch them selves by being where they are going before they get there.
