First a little story.

Some days ago, I had a game in my Cleveland and I was bottom tier so I decided to follow our carrier around. About 5 min in, we came under attack from the enemy carrier and thanks to me our carrier survived. He, our carrier, then sank their carrier and the need for my protection was no longer needed. However, at this time we had almost won and the last enemy ships were on the other side of the map. This meant I had no time to do any damage to them before we won. The result for me was 3 enemy planes shot down and nothing else. This gave me a grand total of maybe 100 XP.

So, if the developers want us to protect our carriers, why don't they reward this? Did I win the game for us by protecting the carrier? Probably not, but he did same say thank you for saving his life.

Finally, here is an idea on how to reward defensive AA play. Give ships, mostly cruisers, a zone around the ship the multiplies the XP earned from shooting down planes. However, the multiplier should only be active if there is a friendly ship within it at the time planes are shot down.

reason i dont give carriers AA support.  they got so much AA they steal all the kills and make you waste time.   while it might help them. exp wise and credit wise. its more profitable to afk driving straight at enemy..let your 2ndaries hit something

...where were the enemy destroyers?

Competent DD's generally show up after a period of time.  And cruisers usually appear after causing one of your team's defending wings to collapse.

I usually leave with 1k+ exp when doing CV escort because of those DD's / Cruisers.

I also have a sidenote.  Generally, they're not there to hit the carrier, generally the carrier is sitting near your spawn point.  So I also serve as base guard.

That's the problem with doing AA duty.

On top of that, if it was a 1v1 or 2v2 CV matchup before now it's 1v0 or 2v1 and 2v1 becomes 2v0 real fast.  In any of those cases the enemy team will die extremely quickly to unopposed TBs from your CV leaving even less of a chance for you to do any damage.

The best use for AA if you want to progress in a reasonable way is stick with an IJN BB who is charging straight in.  If you don't have one of those on your team just pop your AA cooldown whenever bombers wander into range, they will sooner or later and you can knock a few down.

Ship damage is where you get your xp, base defense seems to help too, capping might but doesn't seem to as much.  Pretty ridiculous when the USNs whole thing is shooting down aircraft.

his team was good by the sound of it, so the enemy probably all died and never broke through.

It was a good team, or at least good enough to keep ships away from the carrier. Therefore, I had nothing to shoot at with my non AA guns.

don't mind the low exp for escorting a low BB or CVs who ask for it.  Had 38 plane kills doing this in my Cleveland once.  The good will is a plus.

Funny how you called that a competent DD driver. A competent DD driver wont be dumb enought to engage a CV when he is being escorted by a cruiser.

Experience for plane kills and also for spotting damage would be really nice.

My fighter keeps an enemy ship spotted.  Increases my team chance to win, but I get no exp or credits for spotting.

It's a waste of time...especially if your max tiered. Just came from a game were we got royally owned: they have 3 more tier 9's, including one of their CV's. our AA was pretty much a cleveland and me in the pensi...we even tried to protect the CV's...a freaking waste of time, and a [edited]miss match.

Adding to that. Somtimes you cant get to the CV and  probably better torping other HVT's to help team and swing the game in your favor instead of losing al most half the game searching fo an enemy CV.

Competent means that they broke through your team's blockade.  Yes, they only need to pay attention to spotting distances, but it takes quite a bit of luck and dancing to break in without the enemy knowing.  Luck because sometimes the enemy masses on the side that you're sneaking in from.  Dancing because of the planes flying overhead.

Generally though, I think the DD driver is confident that he can take out the escorting cruiser.

And you can send torps as you try to get past the enemy.   If they're coming from a different direction than expected, even the enemy will be confused.

With CBT i have more then 1k games in DD's. Trust me i know how to play them. Somtimes getting to the CV brings you way out of torp range and yeah going there if you have the occasion you could send some torps from behind the enemy but this will only give the enemy team the info that you are going for the CV. And more often then not CV is so far that you are losing great time. Going for CV is nice but there are so many variables you need to take in consideration before going CV hunthing. Sorry for my english.

Ah, so that's what you meant.  It's not wrong...

By the time I sink the CV, it's already done enough damage to my side.

On the other hand, by that point I've lived long enough to make myself public nuisance number one.

I guess it really only works while the players are new.  Once destroyer captains wise up and stop dying in the first 5 minutes, I can't just do "nothing" for 10 minutes and expect to turn the game around afterwards.
