Im really tired of watching the ping jump to 50 because im hooked up with players in Australia, why does the server link me with players half way around the world when im in California. I want to limit the player search parameter to only people playing in the western half of the U.S because thats where i am. So how do I do that ?

Everyone is on the same server which is in northern California. Their ping has nothing to do with yours.

You could be playing a game with people located on Mars, and it would not affect your ping at all.  The ping is the response time between your system and the server.  It is solely affected by your computer and the internet between you and the server.  As such, each person's ping is independent of everyone else's in the game.

Likewise, a long ping time from one or more clients only affects those clients in that the game is not turn based.  It is client server technology where your client is basically just an input-output device.  The game runs on the server, and the server tells each client where the ships are, when they are damaged, and so on.  It doesn't care if a particular client got the information 200ms later than another client.  The game continues on and only the slower client is affected.  It doesn't wait around for you to click your mouse button before it proceeds.  When you click your mouse, your client sends notification that you clicked your mouse.  When the server receives it, it will act upon it.  As such, it doesn't matter if someone in Australia is experiencing a slow connection speed.  The server doesn't wait around to see if he clicked his mouse as well.  When the information gets to the server, it will act on it whether it took 24ms or 240ms to get there.  The game doesn't even wait more than 30 seconds for everyone to connect to a given game.  If you are not connected in that time, oh well.  You can join in when you do connect.

In other words, your ping rate (and 50ms is nothing) has nothing to do with anyone else connected to the game.  Only people with slow connections are affected.
