torpedo bombers and mountains, is it broken?

I've seen more than a few times that ships that are close to mountains (like the ones from Fault line) can be hit by torpedoes that were shot from planes that at the time were flying way too high to fire them.  The whole idea to be close to the mountain is that the planes won't have space to lose altitude (they were at around 3000 ft  - 5000 ft to fly over the mountain after all) and be able to drop the torpedoes from that side. Instead they would have to fly around, over the ship and turn in order to have the space to drop them. This would ensure some AA time and hopefully 1 or 2 planes would be shot down depending on how effective and strong that given ship AA is. Alas, that is not what I've been seeing at all, planes come as if they came THROUGH the mountain, drop torpedoes almost in distances of less then 1 km from said mountain and fly away with very little time to AA to actually fire at them. Are other folks seeing this as well? How well do you think the environment is being taken into account by the airplanes? Not very in my opinion.

Yeah had this happen to me in my Fuso once. I was grounded on an island due to "Issues..." and a TB squadron comes from OVER the islands mountain ridge and drops them not even 1k from my ship and I take a face full of torps. My Fuso was practically perfect parallel of the island when it was grounded and the TB's dropped in between what would be literally about 50ft and sinks me...

Soooo I got no clue how this is possible considering it really should be Impossible. -.-

If you are not within arming distance of the island then it is the same as if you were anywhere else on the map.

I agree BGrey, but the point is the planes are high in the sky to clear the mountain, need to dive to torpedo drop altitude first in order to be able to fire them right? so that takes some time / space that in the situation I and HerrCommandant were in should not be possible. So it seems to me that there is some bug on the torpedo drop algorithm that is not taking that needed space/time into account. Now, how wide spread that is or if it is really a very limited edge case we cannot know for sure on such small sample size :)

There are no other considerations. If the planes enter the circle the run begins and the torpedoes drop at the chosen location. Unless that location is on land the torpedoes will appear and everything happens as it would any other time.

I have seen this issue as well and it is related to another issue many people have: there is very little visual clue as to when torpedo bombers are dropping their torpedos.

I think the way planes move in the game is unrealistic and changes should be made so that ships can better determine when they are descending to drop torpedoes. I also routinely see planes glitching through mountains, and dropping torps that seem to be coming out of the mountain side itself.

Its pretty silly how fast they change direction, drop altitude, drop torps, turn around, and run away all within seconds. I would describe plane movement in this game as mosquito like, they don't look fluid or graceful at all, its annoying.

In addition to cliffdiving torp bombers, I have also had torp bombers start their torpedo run clearly on the "out of bounds" side of the blue line and drop them just inside the blue line. This should be prohibited.

Not until they deal with border huggers.

This is a good way to deal with them

I can't think of any reason they shouldn't be allowed to do that.

islands are all sorts of buggy, AA is full of laser beams and shoots through mountains as well

They also have their own gravity when I captain a destroyer.

As for the cliff-diving... It'd make CV's more interesting if torpedo bombers couldn't perform a run from certain directions.

It'd also make dive bombers more useful too since they can cliff-dive...although I'm not so sure they can pull up in time if there's a cliff on the other side.

Although I wonder if this would start an era of hiding behind obstacles to avoid torpedoes.
