"Cannot fire unless directly on target" thing

I take my new South Carolina out for a drive.

I eat a torpedo from a DD going CQC with me, I'm driving almost right at him and aiming to attack him once he circles around to my left.

My reticles are all on his bow, but my guns, all loaded, refuse to fire because my hull is turning a bit too fast for my turrets to track as I try to keep the guns on target.

By the time I realize this, he reloads and finishes me.

Can we please fix the fact that if the reticle is not perfectly on the aim point you can't shoot? Battleships are completely unable to turn and shoot as a result, and now that I think of it my Japanese DDs have the same defect. Why can't it be "within 0.1 degrees" or something if your turrets are slower than your hull traverse? IT would help with the frustration (the guy ran straight into a BB's loaded guns all pointed on his hull, he should be dead) with the "oh my aim point was on his bow, my guns pointed 0.1m behind that point, and they're too slow to catch up fast enough to shoot him at all" stuff.

...I can get behind this, if it would be 'within 0.5 or 1.0'...would add a bit more need for true "aiming skills" to able to pull off effectively, but makes sense. Regardless, when a ships captain says "FIRE!" the crew doesn't say "Sorry Cap'n, gotta wait till we are back to aiming where we were before or stop turning."

Can't you just move the reticle?

Hmmm.... I can see how this could be usefull, but on the other hand I know in some situations it would be a detriment (reduced accuracy, especially at longish ranges). So perhaps it could be implemented as a setting slider, like: Variance at Which Guns Can Fire: 0o|-------------|1o|-------------|2o

I believe if you lock your guns on a bearing [Ctrl][X] or a sector [shift][X] they will fire when you press the mouse button.  You aren't likely to hit anything or you may hit a friendly but what the heck.

You could set it up for bearing lock and dance with the devil.  Just don't do it with a team mate down range.

Weapon Bearing (Shift-X) (Ctrl-X) (X)

Battleships that travel with escorts should not have the problem of destroyers closing on them.  Try making friends.

If your guns are pointed at a spot you think suitable to fire, then aim where the guns are pointed.  Problem solved.

If we did this, the friendly fire rage would be epic.

The problem is that during a maneuver in USBBs, you can't even do that. You move your mouse to the position of the guns, it puts your guns out of position anyway.

You GREATLY outturn your turrets in the USBB line, even AFTER WG zapped their maneuverability.

And a note, Lock to relative and lock to Sector will not solve the problem as they must reach their target point before you can fire.

Honestly, this is just an experience issue. OP, you have less than 100 games total. Its just a matter of learning how you ships work (ship turn rate, turret rotation rate, etc.); once you have a few more games of experience, this will rarely if ever be an issue.

Look at it this way - who would accept only being able to fire torps when they're exactly in the white area?

Actually, the white area is torpedo in game "aim bot". Torpedoes still have to wait until the tubes are finished rotating to the direction you are aiming until you can fire.

Yep. You can't fire if you don't have your green cone along your red line.

But there's no real cases of out manuevering your torpedo tubes.

Actually "out maneuvering your torpedo tubes" can happen frequently if you're avoiding a torp spread.

Unless the torp tubes are on the completely wrong side of the ship, I have not had issues with either US or IJN torp aiming times, even in turns. BUt don't even get me started on IJN DD turret rotation speeds....
