Upon seeing the IJN camos available, I questioned the historical accuracy of the overall green patterns established in WoWS.  I did not really seek out information concerning this until today.

This war document seems to indicate that IJN camo patterns typically used dark grey, silver grey, black, and white as a general rule.  Seaplane Tender Akitsushima seems to break the trend with only the forward third of the ship painted in a dazzle striped light green and almost black green.  A design study using CVEs was conducted but came short on results; patterns failed to make the vessels unidentifiable/difficult enough to identify from aircraft.  A couple of cases where ships were incorporated into landmasses as camo were used during the war, CV Katuragi appears to be a fairly successful attempt using bamboo screens, nets, PT boats landed to make it appear like used coastline, etc.

Which brings me to the generic camos in game...  They appear to be fabricated from a few individual cases or just outright made up, correct me if I am wrong.

If you want accurate skins, see Tanz's skins in the fan art section. It is pinned.

~snip for cleanliness~

Someone on these forums has a signature that I found to be pretty fitting in describing these camo patterns. It goes something like "Yo we heard you like camo so we painted your historical warship with tiger stripes."

I might actually take up reblurr's suggestion.

I gave up on historical accuracy when i realized destroyers could pop in and out of smoke by a simple 'yes' 'no' equation. also two words. 'ghost torpedos'

IJN barely used camo for their major ships.  The few historical ones that can be seen in-game are such like Shokaku's premium camo.  Some of the others were used on I believe small patrol boats in China.  There's also the case that many modelmakers used some of these camo patterns for a long time ahistorically, so this may have influenced WG's choices.

I imagine they might add Musashi's black camo as an option for Yamato later on.
