With bombers towards the bombers is the best.

If you are going away from them speed up. The farther they have to travel to reach you the more spread out they will be. Hence the easier to dodge. If you have turned away from them don't forget that as you look behind you, your rudder controls are reversed. The other thing to remember is that you will change your heading faster, the faster you are moving, but you will have tighter turns, the slower you are moving. As to a general rule of thumb there isn't one. It depends on what is ahead of you or behind you and how long it will take you to turn parallel to the course of torpedoes. If the choice is between going clam digging (beaching your ship on land) and taking a torpedo hit, go ahead and beach yourself. Just go all back before you do to minimize the collision. You may want to read the Evasion section of this guide.

If you go away from them you are actually slower to get out of their way. Always (if you can) turn towards torps, it will give you your best chance of forcing a miss. I know if you suspect a torp launch it helps to slow down but does it matter whether you turn towards them or away from them? +1 for asking for advice for avoiding torpedoes... instead starting a nerf torpedoes thread. You basically can keep going in a straight line if you want. Just drop from full to 1/2 every 10-15 seconds if you know a DD is in the vicinity. It works that well... The only time you will need to maneuver is if you meet a DD pilot who is adept at eyeing the torp lead and know how to create a spread that will guarantee 1+ hit even if you are changing speeds. 26 SgtSlaughter82 Beta Testers 30 posts 661 battles Report post #7 Posted July 28, 2015 In addition to the advice already given, here's a few tips from an IJN DD captain: - Don't island hump. If you're sailing around an island, stay at least 2km from the shore. If you come around right next to the shore, and there's a spread of torps waiting for you, you'll have little room and time to maneuver. - When sailing in open water, change your course and speed every 15 seconds. Even if the changes are miniscule they'll cause torps launched from 6km out to have a greater chance of missing you altogether. - If a DD is after you, run away from it. Keeping them behind you forces them to either try to hit a slimmer target or disengage altogether. - Unless you're about to fire, stay out of sniper view. Keep tabs on your minimap, and keep moving your camera around. Vigilance will keep you alive, being oblivious will send you to the bottom.

The stern of a ship kicks out when turning because that's where the rudder is. By turning towards it, you reduce the chance of a rudder/engine crit, and you can maneuver much more cleanly around torpedoes using your bow as a guide. 350 inktomi19d Members 1,744 posts 8,862 battles Report post #10 Posted July 28, 2015 What others have said is right. Either way works, but towards is generally better since it's easier to cause a complete miss. It's important not to end up in a bad position after though -- don't turn towards if that's going to put you right in the middle of the enemy fleet, or isolate you in a bunch of islands that you can't maneuver out of. You're more likely to take a hit when you turn away, but it can have benefits, like gaining distance from your attacker. Another important thing is to accept that you are likely to get hit at least once and plan for it. Against many opponents you will face more than one torpedo spread, possibly from different directions, so dodging one spread might put you in perfect position to catch 4 or 6 torpedoes from the next spread -- sometimes it's better to take one or two hits from the first spread (which is usually going to be sloppiest) if that puts you in a better position for a later spread.
