Me being new playing this game use HE shells first to start a fire and then switch to AP shells along the water line over the ship I am shooting at . After all the enemy ship needs water to fight the fires that I started . I am just here to help .:hiding:

ROFLMAO... brilliant little video.

Three things can happen with AP of 8" (203 mm) calibre or less:

1) the shell rips through your target (DD/CC) with little effect (as illustrated in the video);

2) the shell ricochets (CC/BB) off the hull or deck (especially at close range); or

3) the shell gets a magazine/citadel hit and your opponent either suffers critical damage or vaporizes before your very eyes.

If you're in a DD (destroyer) or CC (cruiser), use HE for close quarters to make your opponent burn (out to 75% of your gun range) and AP for the last 25% of your range to take advantage of plunging shell fire into a magazine/citadel hit. As with all things experiment.

If you're a BB (battleship) stick with AP -- switching between the two can be painstakingly disruptive to your survival.
Even at close range with a DD/CC, a 12"+ (>305 mm) AP shell can achieve a 'devastating strike' on your target, and once they're within your secondary gun range, you can then switch your focus on other larger prey.

that why there an commander skill that can save you on 33% reload time when switching ammo(very useful for BB). So say you want to switch to He shells but already habe Ap shells loaded. That will save you 10sec off the reload time

Plunging fire works for long range not short range!

The ammo switching skill is, in my experience, a trap.

There are very few instances where I would want to wait 20 seconds instead of 30 seconds to fire HE if it means giving up a volley of AP.  Even in the case an enemy DD pops up at 5km out, I'm giving him what I have loaded and THEN loading HE, not giving him 20 seconds to scuttle away before giving him anything.

not really... that point is better spent elsewhere for a BB skipper.

gotta say that video was great, more! Maybe,we can get Good Advice #1 with the goldfish?

It's entertaining but I'm not sure it's effective communications wise.  In fact it's so poor at explaining itself it's worse than the bad advice it's trying to correct. If one was a noob, then the take away would be use HE not AP.  There is no clear explanation as to what is happening.  It also give the impression that AP shells are just solid hunks of metal that just punch holes in stuff.  I would grade the video an F- on those grounds.

For an over pen to happen the shell must pass through the ship missing anything solid before the fuse goes off.  In some cases if the metal is thin enough it could also fail to trigger the fuse.  In game they seem to have modeled these ships mostly hollow making over pens far more likely plus the never cause flooding.

10sec off 30sec isn't much helpful. I play BBs every so often and the first thing I do in game is set ammo to AP. Afterwards I don't change it unless I get stuck at the end chasing a CV, and even then I might keep AP.

I do like the animation and pretty much showing what overpenetrations look like.

I will also be pleased to see more low tier BBs spamming HE at my Arkansas. :bajan:

I agree. The only that makes me happier than an enemy BBs shooting HE at me in my BB, is if they are giving me their broadside while doing it.

If I got AP loaded in BB (which I nearly always do), I'm not gonna switch to HE and even with the skill, thats a 20s reload. I fire those AP rounds and wait 30 seconds. AP can and will wreck destroyers too. A few overpen hits for 1k damage each adds up when they only got 12k HP.

This video is great, it's just gonna encourage more noobs to HE spam in BBs. :D
