Does the game have Goal?

I am being a bit Socratic here but I would like to know what people see as the goal, if there is a goal.

I see CBT players racing up to tier X for a favorite ship.  Do you just collect ships?   Do you explore all of the game content or maximize your killing power in one ship?

Do you have to go to tier X?  Do you just stay on tier 2 and kill new players with no mercy farming stats so you can brag?

Maybe the question should be: What kind of options for play styles are there for a new player to enjoy and is there a right way or a wrong way to play?

Just looking for some ideas that maybe I have not thought of yet.

Crush your enemies.

See them driven before you.

Hear the lamentations of their women.

Winning the match is my goal, this also makes the grind go faster. I tend to feel people playing to grind are doing it wrong.

The goal?  Have fun.  Isn't that why anyone plays any games?

The interesting part of a game like WOWS or WOT is you can make any goal you want.  Is T10 your goal? OK.  Is hanging out in the mid tiers and just playing for fun the goal?  That's fine too.  Is collecting all the ships in a nation, or in the game your goal?  That works.  Socializing with like minded friends as you shoot ships?  Go you.

Its a video game.

I play for fun.

I'm not going to go past tier 6 to keep my sanity. I'd rather do something I enjoy. I have no end goal. Maybe to just collect all the tier 6s I can. I won't have to worry about the grind or losing my money. Just hop in a New Mexico or Farragut, and have a nice time. Maybe I'll go to 7, but playing at 8-10 when I'm losing my money isn't fun for me.

Grind till you lose interest. Come back when you want to play again in a few months. Grind more then give up again. Repeat.

That's the purpose. This game has no community to speak of. The clan warring clans interacts with each other almost exclusively, and interacts negatively with public games (pub stumping).

Its a match multiplayer game. There are no overarching goals really, unless your a stat hound and want to see how "pro" you can get your stats to say you are.

As for personal goals, those can be what ever you want them to be. Some people want to get back to a favorite ship from CBT, which is a valid goal. Others want to try every ship in every tree atleast once. Thats a valid goal. Others have a favorite ship at mid tier and they just want to drive it over and over. Thats a goal too.

Point is, do what ever is fun for you and when you get bored, close the game and take a break, or drive something you never tried before.

Not in the terms of story modes if that's what your wanting to know.  PvP portion has objectives you can complete to earn extra credits but that's it's.  Pretty much its just you and your team facing the opposing fleet for credits and XP.

Beat me to it.

OP, I think many of the people you see moving quickly to end tier ships are looking forward to end-tier gameplay, i.e. ClanWars (or its floating equal). In general, however, most people will never make it all the way to t10, and if they do, will not enjoy the harsh level of play there. Like WoT, I expect t6-8 to end up being the sweet spot where most people play, due to the good ships available at those tiers, and fact that the game economy will be more forgiving there.

As far as goals, I think having fun is what everyone is here for. However, the definition of fun is variable. The best part about WoWS, in my opinion, is the inclusion of PvE. It allows the casual players an arena where competition isnt the major force, while still being challenging enough that repeat play is worthwhile. The time and effort WG seems to have put into the bot programming there is impressive.

There are two definitions of 'goal' in place here.  The smaller one, which would be 'What is the goal in each battle', and the larger one, which would be 'What is the goal in playing the game over and over?'.   In the smaller answer to the question, the goal is for the player's team to complete the stated objective of the current battle as determined by the game mode in place.  Note this does not always mean destroying them all.

The larger definition requires much more consideration, as the scope is much larger.  In relevance to this regard, I've come to believe there are two types of gamers online these days.  Perhaps that has been the case for a long time, and why there are board games and role playing games.

The first type of gamer is one that expects the game to set the goals and objectives for the players.  They want clear victory conditions laid out, and something they can point to and say 'I've won'.  Without such pre-defined goals established for them, the game has no meaning and everything done in the game is seen through the lens of how far they have progressed towards the 'end game' and what achievements they have accomplished over others.  To this kind of gamer, the goal of WOWS is to fully progress through all of the ship classes, own all classes of ship, earn every accomplishment/accolade in the game, and achieve top status on the leaderboards.  Often times, the game ceases once these goals are met, and the player looses interest when there are no more goals set for them to achieve.

The second type of gamer is one that expects the goals and objectives to be found and set by the players themselves.  They don't necessarily have problems with victory conditions, as long as they don't block access to some features of the game/disadvantage players based on pre-set goals from some agency that doesn't share their own interests in the game.  The game has meaning based upon whichever goals they set for themselves, often just enjoyment of playing being enough.  To this kind of gamer, the goal of WOWS could be the challenge of testing themselves anew in each battle against different or familiar opponents, the feeling of commanding a warship as it sails across a virtual sea into hostile conditions, being able to sail on ships only glimpsed in history books or museums, or even pursuing a fictitious career of the commander of a warship in a world different from what we know today (I have my own 'background story' for WOWS's environment, but I doubt anyone but me would have any interest in such fantasy, for instance).  Most times, the game never ceases as it is always being renewed each time it is played, or a new goal comes to mind.

So, I would submit it largely depends on the player type that will determine the larger 'goal' of WOWS.  Some only look for thrills and don't want the burden of determining their own path through the game, while others want to explore it past the surface of what is provided.
