What I've noticed about AP and HE using DD (USN)

So I have searched the forums on the topic of AP and HE rounds but i have not seen this talked about.

 

So I have noticed when fighting BB's and CC's that HE is best at the start at any range to bust up the ship *make it all black and have battle damage* then swapping to AP to punch through this gap in the armor.

 

Do I have this [edited]backwards or is the common tactic?

HE to start fires and for when you can't pen or over pen with AP 

AP to fill your QQ quota when you citadel some poor saps citadel causing 10,000 dmg+ per citadel.

If you goo BB just ignore switching to HE once you go AP commit to it, takes too much time to switch back

Allot can happen in that 30 sec reload

I am only doing BB to get my carrier. The slow ships drive me nutz
