Question about the guns firing automatically

I have just started playing in the Open Beta and am learning slowly by watching higher tier players.

Since we all start with cruisers, I have been focusing on learning the first two in each line, to try to get very comfortable with what each does well and how to get the longest life in each situation...

I slowly emerge around an island to expose (and be exposed to) a single enemy cruiser.... take aim.... wait for all my guns capable of firing to line up and go green... then FIRE

Zoom out, to be sure I am not getting tunnel vision and being flanked, when my main guns begin firing on their own and the game makes you follow each shell, like to show you how badly you are missing.

I right click, turn away and back up to get under cover and get back on target.. but it's too late and I'm no longer in a good position with surprise to finish the first target... who by now is joined by friends and is limping the rear for protection.

Does anyone have an idea of WHY the main guns would do that? It does not do it in every battle and when it does, it drives me crazy.  I intended to submit a ticket (in case it is a bug, since this is Beta); but I thought I might just ask first before trying to convince someone at WG that there is a glich.

There are multiple modes that you can fire the main guns in.

Single Click: This should fire one main turret.

Double Click: This fires all main turrets (this is by far the most convenient).

Holding a single click: This ripple fires main turrets for as long as you hold the button down.

I can't remember the way to follow the shells right now. That seems to be what you're doing though.

Clicking the scroll wheel or the z key will put you into shell following mode. So it is possible that you may be accidentally hitting the scroll wheel.

I'll try the mouse without a roller ball to play... probably what happened.

It is very disorienting.  :amazed:

I believe you can just unbind that control, as having the mouse wheel to zoom in and out when shooting long range is too useful.

View Basics

In view basics cinematic shoot is found in the first post.  It is normally set up on the middle mouse button.  It fires one turret and the view follows along behind as they zoom through the air on their enchanting flight.  Very entertaining and sure to provide a distraction.  In the first post you can also find Track Object Camera where your view point will follow shells or torpedoes or a flight of planes.  That is assigned to the Z key.

When you've read all of view basics you will find links to other threads that will teach you about Navigation, Gunnery, Torpedoes (firing and evading), Turret Focus, Locking your guns to a bearing, etc.  I hope you find them of some use.  Each one in the series will link to the others so you can read them in any order you like.
