So, you want to captain the most powerful ships in the game do you?  These here aren't ships for little girls, so pull up your pants and let's do this the right way!

Step 1:  Load AP.  You don't need that pansy HE stuff, and you don't need to use fires.  Only people who fear the power of a 16" AP round need HE, and you don't want to be one of those babies.  (Seriously, you'll do better with AP than HE once you get used to aiming.  Better off not starting with the HE training wheels, and jumping right into the fire.)

Step 2:  Head straight at your target!  Make him (or her) fear your presence, even if it's a bigger BB!  (Keeping your armor angled so you never show the flat side of your ship is highly important as it makes your armor considerably stronger, and prevents you from taking citadel damage.  Note that it may be wiser to keep up a retreat from your target, still keeping as little of your profile showing as possible.)

Step 3:  Make that lousy player waste his shells, then show him you POWER!!!!!!!!!!  (Wait for your opponent to bounce shells off of your ship before turning to bring your rear guns onto the target, once you fire, turn back again so that your armor is pre-angled against his next attack.)

Step 4:  See that cruiser?  Buy him some cookies and make friends.  Keep him around with you, and don't let anyone hurt your little friend.  (Cruisers are a major asset for a BB especially when providing you with anti-air fire, destroyer defense, and adding to your firepower when killing other ships.  They're fragile though, so you want to be the one soaking up the shots.  Don't be afraid to remind any ship who chooses to shoot at him rather than you, that you are in fact the most important target.)

Step 5:  Cowards hide in the back, shoot at water, do nothing for team.  (You're in a ship with the highest HP and armor out of all the ship classes in the game.  Just because you can engage at 20+km in some BBs doesn't mean you should engage at that range.  Your guns won't reliably hit in general until around 15km or closer, and you don't want to abandon your team and watch them die.)

Step 6:  Why are you alone?  A party isn't any fun if you're holding it for yourself.  INVITE GUESTS!!  (Always bring friends, a lone BB is a dead BB, and having backup can often be the difference between a crushing defeat and a righteous victory.)

Step 7:  See pesky torpedo planes?  Are they within 7km of you?  Then turn towards them!  Make them tremble in your AA! (Turning into TBs will make life harder for a CV player as they try to adjust for your new angle of travel.  If they're already on a path to drop torps, you can take minimal damage as you pass through the wall rather than the wall passing through you.)

Step 8:  HALP, THOSE IS TORPEDOES COMING FOR ME!  Fear not mighty captain, cut your speed and turn towards them!  (Slowing down, while turning into a torpedo wave will at the very least cause you to take considerably fewer hits than if you keep plowing ahead.)

Step 9:  Blind corner, what do???  Train guns and hit the brakes, await DD food!  (Destroyers love to wait for you to poke out around blind corners, so slow down before coming past so any pre-launched torpedoes will miss.  Have your guns aimed and ready for him to appear, and remember that 4 or 5 AP rounds dead center will still strip a large amount of HP off a DD.  Important note- don't just sit there, slow down and make sure torpedoes aren't coming for you, then hit full speed and keep trucking.)

Step 10:  Profit, glorious profit!  (Follow all these things, and you'll come to find that despite people saying the BB is the weakest class in the game, they are an absolute force to be reckoned with when used by a good player.)

You're the biggest baddest ship on the water, and while everyone wants you dead, you've got the tools to kill them all.  SO KILL THEM ALL!  Pay attention to everything, and keep up your situational awareness at all times.  You should never be bored in a BB, as you're always adjusting speed and direction in between releasing devastating salvos from your main guns.  You are a dreadnought, ready to lead your team into deep dookey, and you have the firepower and armor to deal with things when excrement hits the rotary air circulator.  You will see people telling you you're not a good ship, or that you're a waste of space for another cruiser, BUT GO PROVE THEM WRONG!  An aggressive BB can throw the enemy team off guard, forcing them to panic to react to you and your entourage charging at them, while a passive BB can watch their team die and complain that they didn't help.  Don't be a passive BB.

"Why listen to you though, you're just some forum guy!"  says the strawman I just made up for this argument.  Well, here's a couple images for proof that I know something about battleships.

So remember, get out there and be the one who leads your team to victory!

This works for IJN BBs too?

This works for every BB, unless we get something with no armor or guns.  I just happen to prefer the USN BBs for their looks.

Very nice guide Sirus_Patton! So far I enjoy playing the Japanese battleships more than anything else in game. Kongou and Natago ftw!

I agree! I also enjoy the Japanese battleships, but I prefer their looks over the USN battleships.

Thanks for the tips, Sirus. Thread followed for future reference. ^~^

Thanks to everyone for the kind words.  Winning the contest or not, I hope that this guide can be a go-to resource for helping new BB captains find their feet when we get around to the OBT while also helping out current testers who might have trouble with playing them.

I've been playing the CA tree (got my DM) and decided I wanted to give the BBs a try. However I haven't been doing that well but thanks to your guide I can see why. I charge in but have been having major issues with TBs and torps in general, along with not presenting a smaller profile until after I've been fired upon.

I'll give these a try, thank you!

Better off not starting with the HE training wheels, and jumping right into the fire.) If you still learning how to lead and hit your target you should probably still stick with HE. Some types of ships, DD's some cruisers and even some carriers are so thin skinned that unless you hit a vital component or citadel you will over penetrate and do minimal damage. Once you are confident that you can reliably hit your targets, then switch to AP and hope your dispersion doesn't keep your shots all over the place.

Step 2:  Head straight at your target!  Make him (or her) fear your presence, even if it's a bigger BB!  (Keeping your armor angled so you never show the flat side of your ship is highly important as it makes your armor considerably stronger, and prevents you from taking citadel damage.  Note that it may be wiser to keep up a retreat from your target, still keeping as little of your profile showing as possible.) While heading straight for your target does help prevent AP shells from doing to much damage as well as narrowing your target profile, enough players do use HE enough that headed straight towards an enemy can usually mean being constantly on fire. American BBs are some of the slowest ships in game so most enemies can engage you at THIER discretion, not yours.

Step 3:  Make that lousy player waste his shells, then show him you POWER!!!!!!!!!!  (Wait for your opponent to bounce shells off of your ship before turning to bring your rear guns onto the target, once you fire, turn back again so that your armor is pre-angled against his next attack.) This is solid advice, the more bounces the better, but again keep in mind that if most players can't pen you with their AP rounds they WILL switch to HE which will do damage no matter what angle you are.

Don't be afraid to remind any ship who chooses to shoot at him rather than you, that you are in fact the most important target.) Also good advice, teamwork wins games, especially in WoWS. Some cruisers are better than others at AAA,  but every little bit can help.

Step 5:  Cowards hide in the back, shoot at water, do nothing for team.  (You're in a ship with the highest HP and armor out of all the ship classes in the game.  Just because you can engage at 20+km in some BBs doesn't mean you should engage at that range.  Your guns won't reliably hit in general until around 15km or closer, and you don't want to abandon your team and watch them die.)  Try not to be too far forward either, as a BB you are a big slow target that players love to shoot as they are fairly easy to hit. Finding the right distance is tricky and will come with experience.

Step 6:  Why are you alone?  A party isn't any fun if you're holding it for yourself.  INVITE GUESTS!!  (Always bring friends, a lone BB is a dead BB, and having backup can often be the difference between a crushing defeat and a righteous victory.) This should probably be step 1 or 2, as there is no fire power like concentrated firepower and the more guns you can get on a single target the faster it dies and the healthier you will be.

Step 7:  See pesky torpedo planes?  Are they within 7km of you?  Then turn towards them!  Make them tremble in your AA! (Turning into TBs will make life harder for a CV player as they try to adjust for your new angle of travel.  If they're already on a path to drop torps, you can take minimal damage as you pass through the wall rather than the wall passing through you.) TBs can be hard to spot at times so keep your mini map as large as you can have it without being to distracted by it. The mini map is a vital tool that can help you dramatically if you pay attention to it.

Step 8:  HALP, THOSE IS TORPEDOES COMING FOR ME!  Fear not mighty captain, cut your speed and turn towards them!  (Slowing down, while turning into a torpedo wave will at the very least cause you to take considerably fewer hits than if you keep plowing ahead.) Solid advice.

Important note- don't just sit there, slow down and make sure torpedoes aren't coming for you, then hit full speed and keep trucking.) Destroyers also can use islands as cover to dart out, drop torps then pop smoke and disappear back behind the island.. Also unless you hit vital spots with your guns AP rounds tend to punch clean through Destroyers for minimal damage. Against a good destroyer captain with cover, you will most likely only get 1 volley out of your main batteries and with the RNG of dispersion even at close range, good luck hitting the speedy buggers.

Don't  Mindlessly charge the enemy fleet either, if you are outnumbered significantly in an area, try to stick close to your team and concentrate fire where you can. Always try to have as many advantages on your side of the fight as you can. If you are in a fair fight, you did something wrong.

Good effort into this guide but there are a few points I disagree on, some of my thoughts on the points listed are up there in bold.

It's meant as a lighthearted guide to get a player started on playing BBs.  Obviously as you gain experience you'll refine many of the points mentioned, but like myself most people don't want to spend an hour reading a super dense textbook of how to play a ship class well, thus I made something slightly whimsical with valid tactics so reading it could be both informative and fun.  Still, I appreciate the feedback.

An aggressive BB can throw the enemy team off guard, forcing them to panic to react to you and your entourage charging at them, while a passive BB can watch their team die and complain that they didn't help.  Don't be a passive BB.

well and u should add 1 more thing: in 1v1 both BB use the same strategy like this, use HE..... if u both wait each other to show the side. Or do something for another to show thier ciatadel or anyone who follow same strategy like this end up no shot until close around 5km for brawl.

Step 1: I usually load HE for my 1-3 starting salvos from begin at the match. when 20km+ shots is not good for cit, HE'll cause some fire and it better. And it's beter for shooting any DD that rush to u when battle start, with Cruiser it decent. Always AP from beginning not the best choice everytime(unless u have less then 18km range).

Step 2, 3: I recommend NOT sailing straight into any bigger BB(especially if they more than u 2 tier and in a 1v1). For IJN BB they have less gun front so maybe it's fine somehow, but for USN BB they can salvo 1/3-1/2 their front guns at HE and watch u burn( I see too many ppl use your strategy already, they're all easy food. U guys are understimate the power of HE shells use in right place in BB)... I'll be very happy to have easy kill on any lower tier BB sail straight into my face (it happened  alot, not count my escort fleet who can flank and burn the incoming ship). Consider ur manuaver against him too. If yours worse than him, u're going to help him get an easy kill (this happened a lot too).

And last thing: An aggressive BB usually the BB who die 1st(and die fast) due to he soak all inc shells/torps because no one go alone and not eveyone is stupid in aiming and moving now. Be balance, a passive BB have chance in many situation: AA cover for CV, destroy rush DDs, CLs.

Ur guide is good, cover almost the thing of a BB captain need to do. But it prove most useful in 1v1, and 1v1 BB( due to step 2,3, u not count other ships in that situation)   Your step: 2, 3, 7, 8, 9 it depends on who u're facing. Read enmy move is an important thing to do, and any experience player can counter all of these step easy and make it back fire on u( especially DD and CV, when u eat 70%-100%  torps  instead of a few)

Overall a very good guide!

Likewise, I have one or two points to slightly disagree on - I will make strategic use of HE rounds. I've taken out many main turrets, caused explosions, disabled DD engines (you can't run so fast now, can you!) and received many points for causing fire damage. But yes, people used to other boats are likely used to using HE almost all the time. Battleships should use AP on the right targets at the right time.

Once I get some free time and start grinding BBs again I'm going to turn this into a video, so if you're wanting a graphical representation of everything it'll take a couple months until I can churn one out.
