When 3.1 dropped, we noticed that the armor rating disparaged from the stats list. You had to view the hull module to see the overall armor rating. Now, even that is gone. Ships appear to no longer have an armor rating. Why?

Because they never had them to begin with. It was just an arbitrary figure they pulled from a history book or other source but otherwise did not impact anything in the game. Instead of actually modelling ballistics and armor, WG probably just tweaks a damage roll spreadsheet, where they hold values for a damage formula. For example:

New York [hit] 203mmAP = (damage)=[0.85x*angle*] * 1000 base damage

Instead of actually modelling armor and ballistics, the devs just tweak a damage roll formula for a given ship and ammo type. The power of the shell and the armor thickness have nothing to do with it, except as something the devs had the back of their minds when making up the formulas.

The functions of ship angling and citadel criticals disprove your theory.

The fan excuse that the armor values would be put back in later once corrected does nothing except support the theory that the armor values were purely arbitrary to begin with.
