I saw this video on one of the tank blog sites and thought I would pass this on to our community. Jingles does show he was in the Navy in the video. I learn quite a bit on the HMS Belfast, history and operations. In addition, for some reason I thought the Scharnhorst was destroyed by aircraft, in which it wasn't. This a good video to view in my opinion.

Yeah I saw that video quite interesting. I love touring mueseum ships, you learn alot. I live in Massachussetts and we have alot of mueseum ships: The constitution, USS Salem (Only preserved heavy cruiser in the U.S. right now), USS Massachusetts (BB), USS Kennedy (DD) and the USS Lionfish (SS). Highly reccomend seeing all of them, really fun and interesting.

on the east coast you're never more than a train ride and a taxi to a museum!

Very interesting detail how Scharnhorst's radar was knocked out by HMS Norfolk's (heavy cruiser) first hit, rendering the KM ship blind in the midst of a snow storm (take the hint WG,... weather & radar:hiding:). Sharnhorst was forced to fire blind, using enemy muzzle flashes to calibrate aim. .. As night fell, starshells were sent up (yes failing light, darkness.. starshells :hiding:

Its also worth noting that the light cruisers had flashless propellent too, which helped. iirc.

flashless propellant.. So making the calculation of the light cruisers position much harder ..

(where is Ard?)

to summarize, in one epic (if one-sided) battle, we see the following essential ingredients of 1940s maritime conflict that are absent from WOWS :

  • a) Weather
  • b) Radar
  • c) Flashless propellant
  • d) Ambient light (from day to night)
  • e) Starshells
  • f) Kriegsmarine and Royal Navy!

Mr. Jingles is a glorious commentator on all things military :).

If I don't say that, he'll send me to the salt mines :amazed:

It's a shame this was the only ship of any great size they chose to preserve.

It would have been nice to see other ships be preserved...such wonderful pieces of history.

The good news is that Caroline should be up and running in less than a year.

Thought that was in London? (ish)

talking about historical navy events, there is a very fine French fully rigged 32 gun flush deck frigate, Hermione, currently sailing up the US East Coast. Worth checking out on the web (and following if anyone near these locations

in many ways an influential design on later RN and fledgling USN frigates.
