Littorio Class Italian Battleship

http://home.comcast....-web2_small.jpg

The Littorio was hit by three arial torpedoes during the British raid on Taranto in November 1940 and was knocked out of the war for six months. She played a major Role in the second Battle of Sirte (22 march 1942), Severly damaging several British destroyers as they fought to protect a convoy with thier smoke screens. After the Italian surrender, she was Renamed Italia and joined the Allies.

Her sister ship the Roma was hit by two German Fritz X bombs and sunk.

Fairly modern in style, the Littorio was a well designed BB that will Probably have good all-round charecteristics in game. She was armed with 9 15 inch guns, three per turret with two turrets foreward and one aft. Also looks to have some mean secondary guns (6 inchers)

I want this ship, not just because it looks so good, but because the Italian practice of painting Red and white stripes on the bow and stern looks awsome!

Agree these are beautiful ships with great lines.

Yep, even the deck looks like a pizza box!

More seriously, Italian ships were great. But their Navy's command was sub-par.

Just like US and British ships had the tendency to get sunk by German subs?

But yes, the pugliese (or something like it) anti-torpedo system didnt really work as advertised... Those ships took on a lot of water after getting hit by a torp. Still, they're damn pretty ships though.

Beautiful ships indeed... I bought that 1/350 Trumpeter kit of it, but have yet to build it.

Always wondered how these ships would have done if they were commanded and crewed by the Germans.

I said that because the British subs targeted German warships(and an underwater sub) allot more than German subs targeted Allied warships.

And the British subs tended to succeed against German and Italian ships much more than the Japanese did against US ships.

The biggest problem I have with the Littorios is that between the secondaries being only 6" guns and very few cannon, the ship mounts a breathtakingly inadequate AA suite, with less throw weight than a late war Gearing class destroyer and much less effective weight at that.

The sunken vessel of the Roma battleship (Littorio-class) was found in June 28, 2012. It was discovered about 30 kilometers off the northern coast of Sardinia at a depth of around 1000 meters (3,300 ft).

Ah, the Roma...the first ship to be sunk by anti-ship missiles. And nasty missiles they were, those Fritz-X'es. (until the allies managed to jam the radio frequency guiding them) Could easily penetrate the heaviest BB's armor and explode inside. I believe there was a US light cruiser which survived one or two Fritz-X hits, due to the fact that her armor was TOO THIN! The things wents straight through the ship without stopping or exploding.

Talk about being lucky...

I believe an Nat Geo tv show once reproduced two Friz-X'es from wood to test their penetrating power, and even these left deep craters in the ground. Scary weapons...

The Littorios are beautiful ships, but I'm worried about their combat power.  Those 15" guns were high velocity guns, which means they'll be hitting the thick belt armor more often then the thin deck armor.  For added fun, the fall of shot was REALLY bad.

I have a sneaking suspicion that, that is not in fact a good thing...

Awesome...Candy Cane Battleships coming to WoWS!

It is truly a beautiful ship. However, the aforementioned high velocity guns/hitting the belt armor kind of kills it.

The Italian Navy's AA suite for all its battleships was woefully poor and unlike the Allies was hardly upgrade at all, also the Italians never had a good radar suite for main gun fire, let alone AA fire, (note I say did not have a good one, they did develop basic radar sets).

Also as stated, Italian main battery gunfire, while accurate had very bad spread issues, this was a paticular problem with the Conte di Cavour class battleships with their bored out guns. The italian ships were beautiful and useful ships but were handicapped by the strategic timidity of the Italian state, poor AA weapons and FC & a lack of Radar, see Battle of Cape Matapan for that one,

The Italians also had serious problems with coordination with air units, with everything getting routed through commando supremo and taking forever. They missed a good few opportunities that way.

That brings to light a worry I have about the Warship game being akin to the tank game. Combat in the tank game is limited to about 500 meters when we know the real world ranges for tank to tank combat averaged 800-900 meters and long range fire could start at 2000 meters for something like the 88mm L/71. That's twice the size of most existing maps in the tank game.

Given the above are we going to have a similar situation in the Warship game?
