when do i know when to use HE or AP?

A guide how to be a good BB captain for both fast and heavy BBs are well appreciated as well

I use Kawachi atm so i cant outrange my enemies tehee

 

My doctrine mainly is to stay away from any enemies as much as possible while bearing my guns to their position. the thing is i dont know when to use the right munition to the right target. I stick mostly with HE since it makes short work of crawling DDs and does an insane amount of critical at the longest range i can shoot.

HE against everything but battleships though right now HE is better against BBs so just use HE for now

i've been using AP for all BBs... is that acceptable? on cruisers below yes HE reaps them

AP bounces/overpens everything and doesn't deal consistent damage. HE ignores armor and always does damage. Not to mention it sets fires and damages modules with more ease... So yeah, for now just HE until HE gets balanced out.

when did the HE trend started?

At close range always use AP against:

- BBs

- Heavy Cruisers

- Any Cruiser 1 tier or more above you

 

At long range always use AP against:

- BBs

- Any Cruiser 2 tiers or higher

 

At close range use HE against:

- DDs

- Any Cruiser 1 tier or lower

- Light Cruisers (Omaha, Phoenix)

 

At long range use HE against against:

- DDs

- Any Cruiser

Since you are a very short range BB, I would advise to stick mostly with HE, unless you are in a line engagement with another BB, then switch to AP after the volley. But HE should be your ready load when you are not active engaged with another BB or CA. Reason being, you only get one volley to to his a DD or CL that pops up, and you need to crit their Torp rack right away to have  chance of survival.

The fun thing about the Kawachi is you don't need to go broadside. Jiggle from side-to-side in shallow  half-turns to bring your two side guns to bear forward. Fire then swing the other side forward. I used that in a high level match I was thrown into and had a bit of fun.

when did the HE trend started?

 

About a day or two after the introduced 3.1 when people found out how good the fires were and that HE ignores all armor angling ect and has a decent chance of knocking out modules.

I stopped using AP against battleships. Can't count the number of shells I've watched them soak up without popping damage in 3.1 as a cruiser. Theoretically I try to use AP against cruisers, but HE is so useful that I usualy just forget and spam it instead.
