Our music tastes depend mainly on the type of music we were exposed to as our brain was developing. Evolutionarily-speaking, music evolved to help identify us as a members of a certain species and tribal group. You can still see this tribal aspect of music today. Before writing, music also was a means to the end of keeping an oral tradition and history of the tribe alive. It's easier to remember songs than long lines of prose.

Personally, my favorite songs are ballads:

"Virgil Caine is the name
And I served on the Danville train"

"And every one of them words rang true
And glowed like burning coal"

"Did they really believe, when they answered the call
Did they really believe that this war would end wars?"

"With the northern lights a-running wild in the land of the midnight sun
Yes, Sam McCord was a mighty man in the year of nineteen-one"
