I was idly wondering which states had battleships named after them and which ones had more than one battleship named after them. So here is a full list of US states and the hull number of any battleship that entered service with that name (Maine and Texas didn't have hull numbers). I also have listed the ships that were planned but cancelled.

Also there is one other battleship that was launched that was not named after any state, the USS Kearsarge BB-5 was named by an act of Congress after the USS Kearsarge.

USS Utah BB-31 was the oldest battleship in service at the start of WWII (as a training ship).

On a completely related note lack of WORKING html code tags makes this look far uglier than it should.

I just noticed you forgot USS Indiana BB-58 :izmena: ...otherwise a very good informative post about U.S. battleships.

And USS North Carolina BB-55...I think those are the only 2 you missed.

Is not Washington a North Dakota class battleship, responsible for the sinking of the imperial battleship Kirishima?

USS Washington BB-56 was 1 of the 2 North-Carolina class battleships...but yes she along with USS South Dakota BB-57 were responsible for sinking IJN Kirishima at the Naval Battle of Guadalcanal.

Don't worry about it...I don't know a lot about a lot of the ships on the list either.

Great list but you marked North Carolina, Washington, South Dakota and Massachusetts as cancelled. These ships finished construction and served throughout WWII. Washington and South Dakota were scrapped and North Carolina was turned into a museum.

Those four battleships along with the Iowa and Montana re-used names from a class of ships cancelled in the 20s.

they should put in the battleships that got bombed in peal harbor some of them did not see action in WW2.

You could technically say that they all saw action in WWII because they were all bombed. Most of the battleships at Pearl were eventually returned to service. Their primary uses were convoy escort and shore bombardment but a few saw action during the battle of Leyte Gulf were they fired on the Japanese Southern Force.
