It's all about control. WOWS is now requiring a player to be 18 in order to purchase loot boxes. At 18 you can serve in the military, vote, open a bank account, and buy a house. Essentially you are considered a young adult and responsible for your own actions (and, yes, I realize that there are still alcohol and firearms purchase restrictions).

If you can't stop yourself from buying an excessive amount of loot boxes then it is your problem, not the gaming company's. It's the same thing if you are unable to stop eating too much junk food, watching too much porn, smoking too many cigarettes, etc. A certain percentage of people simply have addictive natures; however, you can't rationally "nanny" the 90% just because the 10% can't control themselves.

WOWS has to be about the least "pay-to-win" freemium game out there. You don't have to pay a penny to play at the highest levels of this game with the most powerful units. The only thing is that it's going to take you longer to achieve these. Also, WOWS gives out an extraordinary amount of premium stuff just for consistently playing their game. I've been rocking a Premium account since Halloween and haven't bought a single minute of Premium time.

Second what Snargfargle is saying.  I looked at my payment history... 2k total of real money on all WG games since 2015.  I haven't spent any on premium time and I just got a super container for the clan oil that gave me 7 more days.  That is how I have been playing last 18 months.  Have enough premium ships to help out on days I go without premium time.

Pay to win?  Umm, no.  I don't see that happening here.

People claim it is so.  But do I see it?  No.

My experience has been that a skilled player can make the available-to-all tech tree ships work well for them.  Oh, some are better than others, to be sure, but many of the tech tree ships are very, very good.

Camos?  No need to spend money on those.  I have 3k+ special camos in my paint locker and most are far better than any tier 10 camo you could purchase.

Premium time?  It is a benefit to have.  And worth paying for, imho.  I bought some last back in 2019.  Should have expired long ago but am still sitting on 500+ days.

Credits?  It's been at least 3 years since I had less than 500M available to me.

FXP, Coal, Steel, Research Points?  Play the game well and those come to you easily enough.  Grind those super tech tree ships to win your premiums!

So...

There is little "pay to win" in Ships.  Darn little.

I would argue there is a whole lot of "take my money because I am impatient" instead.

And WG will happily take your money.  In spades.  With regularity.  Feed them, mate, feed them.
