You used to be able to by holding down control and clicking. It would set up to I believe it was 5 waypoints. HAven't tried it in a long time so maybe it isn't there anymore.

Edit: Meant Shift. My bad.

If not control, s/b the shift key when you’re in map view.

Shift, click waypoints with your mouse.

While in a battle....

hit the M key.
This will bring you to the Map.

Click on a spot on the map, to set a waypoint.
Hold the SHIFT key, if you wish to set multiple waypoints.

After a waypoint has been set, it can be adjusted (moved) by clicking on the waypoint again and holding the mouse-button while moving the mouse to drag the waypoint around.

Don't like the route?  Either manually control the ship to "turn off" the autopilot, or click on the map to set a new way point and clear the old route (which sometimes works and sometimes doesn't, so be prepared to take manual control of the ship if necessary).

You can drop up to 5 waypoints, as well as drag and drop individual waypoints.

like in RTS(Command&Conquer, SupCmdr, etc) play, sending units out on map. Just hold shift, and like Wolf mentioned you can drag them(waypoints) around while in map view. It's actually pretty decent.

Just don't always expect it to not drive into land somewhere. In general you can trust it. It's pretty faithful. But dumb.

And also maps and models don't always coincide, it may say land close and be wrong, it may have no warning(middle lane Two brothers), and still beach. Use it until you get accustomed to moving and doing the ten other things the ship needs.

But eventually you will not want to use it.

It is better to vary your speed , and heading to avoid getting slapped from long distance. It just takes time and practice.

Driving in a straight line, same speed is a recipe for disaster, you do not want to do that. But, it comes with time.

All of these points are true. The only real ship you should ever really need to use this feature in is a CV, and then you will still want to take back control in some situations.
