It's a singleplayer RTS, so although it has ships, it's a totally different type of game.

It certainly looks interesting, but doesn't fit in WoWS' spot in my gaming selections.

The style of naval games to take personal command of a ship is pretty rare, at least if one is trying to find a style similar to WoWS.

- 2015 WoWS

- 2015 Steel Ocean - Basic philosophy like WoWS but did things very differently.  Game originated from China and got a international Steam Release a few months after WoWS went Live.  However, both games had a big drop in population in late 2015 - early 2016.  WoWS recovered but Steel Ocean never did.  SO kept on going in a zombie-like state until the plug was pulled on her in Steam a few years ago.  I'm not sure if the original Chinese version is still going, but the English version on Steam is kaput.

- "That other game" - This "other game that cannot be named" around here had started doing naval combat something around 2 or so years ago.  They've slowly expanded on it.  Not sure how their naval combat part of the game is doing ATM, as I'm not a player.

There's also submarine simulators that have you take command of a boat.

Agreed.

TBH, it's not so much the ships that are the draw for me, but the fact that it's a slower-paced shooter.

I've tried a few spaceship games that looked as if they'd fit the bill, but one was too fast-paced, the other two not as large-scale.

Carrier command 2 by microprose. It's a CV command and control from the CV . Manage units and aircraft from ROV with auto and manual control.it is a bit expensive but the videos are awesome and it looks really fun . On steam

While UAD has tons of potential it has a long way to go for development (especially with the ship designer)

Rebel Galaxy, although it is in a spaceship, plays very much like ships where you have to attack with broadsides and there other mechanics such as squadrons and ship upgrades, mission to do, etc. It was free not that long ago on epic/humble(?). I can’t remember. Single player, give it a whirl sometime if you want a game with a Firefly-esque mood to it.

Battlleship by Milton Bradley. Best PvP and MM ever.

No load times and no tickets to send in after version 4.0 came out.

But some folks hate the Peggy interface. 😏😂

"That other game" has actually been doing ok with it's navel combat. That added light, heavy cruisers, and even some early era battleships. To prevent the tiny torpedo boats from being steamrolled by bigger ships they split the research trees in two. Coastal vessels and deepwater vessels I think are what they are calling them. Having a mixed match of the two is possible but not as likely now that the game dees them differently.

Saw someone here mention crossout, made by the same company as "the other game". It's fun and can also give it the thumbs up for trying. Also mech warrior online, because big stompy machine go pewpew.

I remember watching Flamu do a video on CL Brooklyn when it was in testing.  He was fighting in some confined waters and some small boats like PT Boats tried to attack.  The little things got ripped apart.  It was also amusing watching torpedoes going very slow in the water, not like the water borne missiles in WoWS :Smile_trollface:

I remember reading up on some of it and ran into a forum handle of someone that used to play WoWS and even post in this forum.  It had to be the same guy because the name was unique and he even used the same forum avatar he used while over here.

Ah...those were the days.  The days when the men got to play while the women did the dishes.

That's a shame. Didn't know the game was gone.
More arcadey, but a lot of fun. I think it didn't take off because of the lower end graphics.
Logged in every day for 6 months, built up some serious captains.
Never had time to get back to it, so I stopped logging in.
Another 6 months down the drain. Oh well.

WoWS population drop may have been due to Armored Warfare, or Archeage. Don't remember those exact dates.

I discovered a gamecalled Cross Out

That game was huge when it launched.
Maximum 3 minutes for a battle, most battles didn't last that long,
but you never felt like the battle was short.
Player controlled economy. I made bank in that game.
But it went from Mad Max to flying saucers in 6 months, and everyone got mad and left.
Last time I looked at it, they added even more laser beams and stuff,
and the population was still low. (about 2 years ago?)
They also had a great way to prevent grinding. 400% xp bonus for essentially the first 2 hours.
Allowed you to get up and walk around. Encouraged you to play every day.
And if you tried to grind, that drop off just wasn't worth it.

There is a new game in development that ichase has hinted at multiple times. I don't think that he can share details right now though.

For analog enthusiasts there is "The Pacific War". Huge game covering the whole war. Ship level , 8 hours turns.

Double blind play with umpire is possible, the game twice the maps , unit counters etc...

Social life killer from last century.

A monster .

iEarlGrey has been saying the same thing, with the proviso that it's likely going to require some sort of crowdfunding or kickstarter.

While I'm generally skeptical of crowdsourced game development efforts since most turn out to be vaporware like Pantheon Rise of the Fallen or the infamous Everquest Landmark, if the devs and publisher are well vetted  I might be inclined to participate.

On the subject of Battleship, did anyone else have the old game where you set up lines of plastic ships on the kitchen table/floor and fired little discs at them? Each ship had a few slots on the bottom, and if you got the disc into one it would make part of the super structure pop off. Good times.

As for an alternative to WoWs, man I'd sure enjoy one. I miss the game (circa 2018-2019), but have no plans on coming back to it.

A while back Flamu demonstrated a game called Refight (IIRC). No plane spam, and the maps weren't island diarrhea like most of the ones in WoWS. But it only had servers in China. None in NA, or EU. So lag would probably be pretty bad. Had they an NA server I probably would have picked it up.

SO made its shutdown announcement in February 2020, finally turning off the lights in May that same year.  As mentioned, both WoWS and SO had population declines within their first year of release.  WoWS recovered, SO never did.  SO just kept on going for 4 more years in a weird near death state until the plug was pulled.  The last update that I could tell from a quick glance where stuff was added was December 2016.

I never played SO but I knew some guys that did when it released, and had seen videos.  It's just like WoWS in terms of taking control of a ship and going at it in a PVP environment just like WoWS.  But the action was different, faster it looked like.  They also had Submarines right from the start, at least for the Steam version.  Again, this game was originally released in China.

For the sake of game history, here's an old WoWS thread from January 2016 when someone posted the tech trees of SO of the era.

It 'was' faster. It was actually fun. But I never thought it would appeal
to the 'historian' types that play this game.
The subs were actually fake. Played like a torpedo boat, but there was no ship,
just a black spot on the surface of the water.

There's a very fun f2p ship game on Steam named 'Maelstrom'.
(Or there was. Haven't checked in a while.)
I have maxed out crews on my account over there as well.
But it wouldn't appeal to this crowd.
Kinda like pirate ships, but with some over-the-top gimmicks, cartoon style colors, etc.
It doesn't look bad, and it's a lot more fun than it looks.

The other game that shall not be named is very grind heavy and takes a million years to reach different tears. They also mixed the aspect of Arcade and Simulator which makes a crap ton of things unbalanced and not fun.

Steel Ocean died when the devs released mod kits to their CC and angered the rest of the player base.

Really cool game with a great concept. Has some room to grow too.
