Look at this ...

3PlKQjN.jpg

"Learn more about legendary soviet ship"

Now, there are two possibilities here ...

  1. Either someone is doing a very clever parody of the hollywood Russian accent, or
  2. It's just a poor translation done in a hurry and without doublechecking the grammar

My money is on 2.

If only they had an office based in North America that primarily spoke Englisch that could do this for them...

The Hollywood Russian accent is not a parody, that's actually pretty spot on.

That picture is perfectly still, I can't see who's on it, someone invisible?

Ah, that would explain it. It's a picture, a non moving jpg, so he's just standing so incredibly still he's become invisible to the eye.

Yup.  The Russians I've worked with frequently omit words the way "a" is omitted here.

Funny thing, but stuff like that is really hard for non-native speakers to always get right if their language doesn't have the grammatical constructs (articles in this case) like this, or use them very differently.

Seen this with my native language where native english speakers get immediately confused by the fact that words have grammatical genders and depending on the actual gender used for the article/preposition it can change the meaning or number of the word, or the grammatical case. As a native speaker the stuff just comes naturally to your mind and you don't realize how messy it must be for people who don't speak the language on a daily basis. Fun times.

Nevertheless, that's what translation services are for; just hire (a better) one.

St Peterburg has one of the best universities in the world for foreign language teaching.

Academia tends to focus on teaching "proper" language. Most people speak a "street" version of a language common to the area in which they live. Things do get lost in the translation. When John ran for President his New England version of English was caught by hot mics often. Of course Bush spoke Texas English.

True. I have been there and the local translators in SPB are the best in Russia.  If they want a good translator, they can find it.
