2,009 [PQUOD] Capt_Ahab1776 [PQUOD] Members 5,511 posts 26,840 battles Report post #5 Posted June 30, 2021 (edited) I’ve worked in a machine shop for years. Off and on there is always someone coming up asking to borrow a tool. One of my favorites once a young guy asked if he could borrow a crescent wrench. I asked did he need metric or standard? He looked puzzled and left to ask which did he need. He came back a little more desperate and asked if he could borrow a crescent again. So I asked left handed or right handed? I stopped him before he left to ask which one he needed. Lol yeah, fun times. Edited June 30, 2021 by Capt_Ahab1776 1

I'd say that couldn't happen but I had a roommate in college who literately didn't know how to use a screwdriver. There was an outlet plate missing in the apartment so I just got one and told my roommate to put it on if he wanted to. I handed him a screwdriver and he said "how do you use this?" Seems that his family had a house maid and a groundskeeper and he had never actually had to do anything his entire life. A girl I knew from a farm up north in the county went to LA to college. Shen came back from school one day and her roommate said that she owed $100 for her share of the electrician's bill. She asked her roommate what she'd needed to call an electrician for and her roommate said "The light was out." The girl from my county looked at the invoice and it said "Replaced burned-out light bulb." That's not the only weird thing she told me from her time in LA. I've got several trucks to put out of service." "This horn is empty. Go get me the Can-of-Beep, so I can re-fill it." (The motor-pool maintenance shack actually had this. It was an old empty fire-extinguisher painted green and with the word BEEP stenciled in white painted letters on the side of it.) [Senior non-commissioned-officer <insert-name-here>]: "Private! We're out of form B-A-Eleven-hundred-N-S. Go to the Gunny's Office and ask them for some." Spoiler Form "B-A-Eleven-hundred-N-S" was a package of balloons. Yes, the Gunnery Sergeant actually kept some in their desk, for such contingencies.

When I was in high school, the industrial arts class had a yearly trip the city to see some manufacturing shops. In a machine shop we toured, half the employees were missing fingers. I doubt if you'd find that now but a lot of those men probably started working in the 40s. Needless to say, none of us kids were all that hot about working in a machine shop after that.
