Seen it said often - this putative RPS mechanic.

So when was that exactly?

Carrier RTS was a long, long, time ago in an ocean far, far, away. Before the Dark Times of the CV rebork.

Sorry, I meant RPS - Rock/Paper/Scissors.

A lot of people reference the game working this way, and speak of Carriers as 'breaking' it.

But the Closed Beta Announcement clearly shows four classes - not three.

Whenever i reference at least its always in the way "How it should work"

The RPS method works very well for MMOS, and FPS games, and this game imo would benefit from actually using.

Although not trying to explain the RPS question, this comes from the RTS times when the following also existed :

• One of the loading screens quotes (this isn’t the exact wording as I can’t remember it exactly) that CV’s were used against heavily armoured “big” ships

• When a friendly CV could drop fighters that escorted a ship and actively chased down enemy “attack” flights until it ran out of ammo

• When enemy aircraft could spot torpedos

• When a CV could attack a ship from multiple angles all at once

• When DFAA actual did something … in today’s version it would cause severe rectical bloom

• Where AA could select an attacking flight by right-clicking it similar to how you use secondary guns and ALL AA would focus that attacking flight

• Where the only means of attacking a DD would be with a cross drop of torps from multiple angles

…. and the list goes on

I know of one instance where rock paper scissors was officially mentioned, and it wasn't a statement, but a video.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Bd1npMbcJQ

Frankly Rock Paper Scissors was maybe a thing in early stages of CBT, but after the game was released to the public it's nothing but a gross oversimplification to explain class interaction.

From memory, there was a diagram that showed the R/P/S triangle that showed the interaction between the Destroyer Cruiser and Battleship; the Carrier sat in the middle of the triangle indicating it could attack all the ship types and that they in turn (if they got to them) could attack them too.

Damn that is a cool looking trailer.  I would've come running if I had seen this when it released.

Not sure if it's official, but:

it gets the idea across.  It came from this old thread:

which is an interesting read to see what people were passionate or upset about back then.  Reading through it and seeing old arguments/players is almost like visiting a museum.

That's funny - it reminds me of Tremors 2: Aftershocks.

I’m disappointed I missed the RTS CVs, I realize they were awful and OP in the right hands, but being a 90s RTS veteran starting at the beginning with Dune and Warcraft (1 not 2), it’s a play style I was looking forward to when I started playing WoWS. Now of course, we control airplanes with the keyboard and the ship through auto pilot. Also having played many flight sims, it’s ridiculous to control flight groups with the keyboard. I even used the joystick for the mech warrior series.

You really missed out, I played it and miss it dearly. I would say the OP-ness was mostly compensated by carriers back then usually being busy fighting one another for the first half of the match, and CV unicums weren't very common. Going by stat-trackers, you can still get some OP CVs today, but the difference is they're that way right from the start, and your own team's CV no longer has adequate means of diminishing their spotting capabilities, much to the frustration of destroyer captains.

It was like a different game, but one that I think I might actually enjoy playing separately. That's not to say that I do not actually enjoy flying the planes themselves ... it's fun! But if I could trade it back, I would.

Bonus salute for being a fellow Battletech veteran, by the way!
