Number of CV hulls in the game vs number of CVs in matches

I have seen a number of reactions to the Russian CV announcement that the last thing this game needs is more CVs and that there are already too many airplanes in matches.

That is an understandable reaction, but is it reality?  More hulls doesn't necessarily mean more CVs in matches.  For that to happen it the Russian CVs would have to be coupled with either more CV players or make the existing CV players more active.

Does that happen?  When the German CVs were added did the number of CV matches increase after the initial "new line, ooh shiny" effect wore off?

I don't know the answer to this, but my guess is that a new CV line does not create many new CV players but does increase the activity, at least while grinding it out, of existing CV players.  Overall I suspect that the fear of more CVs in matches doesn't really hold up to reality.

You have to keep in mind, unlike cruisers, DD or BB, CV are restricted to 1-2 / team.

Of course when a new line gets released everyone wants to play the new line but it is "less" noticeable when you have 1/2 new CV / team vs 6-7 same BB/DD/cruisers . It doesnt means more CV/game but it definitely means more CV games

I doubt with the Russian ones, you'll see as big a jump as you did with the German CV's. Don't see them as being as popular.

Now, French, Italian CV's or the old odd tier CV's brought back as even tiers, it would be noticeable.

It's not really an issue of seeing more CV games, it's more so that WG is adding even more CV lines into the game instead of focusing its resources on balancing the current ones. It's why there was so much push back on the inclusion of even the UK CVs, which ended up being underwhelming by CV standards.

Now to be fair, they seem to be experimenting with having AA directly affect the strike wing, which is something I and many others have suggested. But if this were a pure testing ground, then they could just make a premium like they did with Bayard when testing the IFHE changes.

The rocket change is a good balance update. Spotting changes and more AA input needs to happen though.

Looks like they want to collect the data faster.

I honestly don't see the problem people have cause like OP said, another CV line doesn't increase the # of tier X CVs in a game.

But the goal is for more CV players.  Like the KM CVs, the early access will be very generous, and everyone will get at least one of the new Russian CVs, just to try to coax as many people into CV play as possible.

Don't forget, the negative reaction to the announcement has also a lot to do with the message that is send by introducing more CVs, as it shows where the developers allocate resources and time.

  • With the recent addition of hybrids it is likely we will see one or two for every nation, eventually. So more planes from them.
  • Subs are coming closer and closer.
  • More CVs means WG is generally "happy" with the state of them.

By contrast, we hadn't had a new map in forever. People have been complaining about the AA interactions and HE spam a lot, with no indication that these concerns will be addressed (instead more planes for us). Overall, the message by the developers is quite clear: more gimmicks, more planes, less ships, less thinking required.

If CVs were fun to play against for the majority of people then nobody would complain. If CVs were fun to play for most people, few would complain.

Map makers are a different group, unless I am very much mistaken, and they have been occupied adding underwater terrain for submarines to all maps.

It's resources that could be spent elsewhere, on things that would be more appealing to more players, and more profitable for WG.  That is the point.

To a degree yes, but the company could allocate the hours of those 3D designer(s) from new ships etc. towards new maps, or focus on new, more historical ships instead of CVs. Similarly the time of the programmers/designers etc. behind the new mechanics in the subs or grand battle mode against the super-BBs could have been spent on developing a new AA system etc.

What I am trying to say is, it shows where the management places their priorities and invests resources. Maybe they have something new in the pipeline, COVID will definitely thrown a wrench into whatever timeline they had originally planned, but so far the direction is not looking great to me.

Man hours are not really interchangeable like that.  Some of that, sure, but not as easily as that sounds.

To be honest even if someone didn't particularly like CVs, for the reasons you mentioned Soviet CVs could be stomached. Combine them with a cruiser line that uses more planes and a likely surge in hybrids added however and you can see the issue.

Also there's the possibility if the line is popular for 4 CV matches to be more common; if there are too many in queues MM may be overriding that rule.

Personally it's a timing issue and a nation one to a lesser extent, considering Italians and French could also get respectable lines.
