A thought in adding additional Iowa-class

In the past, there have been several requests for the remaining two Iowas being added to the game.

Technically the Tech-tree Iowa is a 'generic' Iowa, as it isn't a specific ship, but based on the class in whole. The original Hull A would be the only version that would have looked like the actual Iowa as she was launched and first went into service.

Missouri, of course, is Missouri, no spotting or fighter aircraft and it has Radar.

So how could another Iowa be brought in, and what kind of gimmick would it have?

A particular Youtube Channel, and a recent addition to AL gave me an idea.

USS New Jersey '68

The ships in the game pretty much cover the period of 1900 to the 1950s. It is in the 1950s that the gun gave way to the missile. By the mid-50s, no new all gun ships were constructed. Many gunships were converted into a combo of gun and missile batteries.

Which brings us to New Jersey of 1968.

New Jersey was brought back into service and did a tour of Vietnam, primarily shelling targets she could reach while sailing along the coast, Her refit was very austere, essentially enough to bring the main and secondary batteries online, and the removal of all 40mm and 20mm guns.

So what would make her unique? What would her gimmick be?

The model would obviously be similar to the Missouri, lacking in aircraft catapults, but still retaining the crane. However, all of the 40mm and 20mm guns would be gone. Many of the 40mm gun tubs would also be removed, but some would remain (the crew used one as a swimming pool). She'd also sport that large box jammer on her conning tower.

The sigma of her guns would be the same as Missouri's. Maybe give her longer ranged secondary's like Mass and Georgia.

She would also have radar, either longer range or longer duration, like the Soviet cruisers.

Her speed would be increased to 35.2 knots, the speed she reached in trials in '68 as well as held that speed for 6 hours.

What would she lose to compensate?

First off, all she would have for AA is her 5in batteries. Nothing close ranged. That would make her a bit more dependent on teammates AA and the CV, if the battle has CVs present. Otherwise, nothing is really 'lost'.

Next, her armor. Iowa and New Jersey as built, carry thinner armor then Missouri and Wisconsin. So in game, New Jersey would reflect this.

Another thought is adjusting her repair party duration and cool down time, reflecting the smaller crew on board.

Her gun range could be limited, not as long ranged as Missouri, however she could carry a spotting helicopter.

These were just my thoughts on it. As I said, there have been several posts in the past in regards to adding more Iowas, and with AL's newest 'ship', people might start thinking about it again.

Thoughts?

I had not seen that.

But it's also being up-tiered.

I would have left it T9 without the MB and Engine boosters.

Also the 35 knots was recorded on trials in 1968 when she was far lighter then either WW2/Korea or the 1980s.

matter of fact, if you look at that picture in the post...... the ship shown is Missouri. The hull number is right there on the bow.

Definitely a New Jersey premium battleship with Massachusetts-style secondaries, maybe some other gimmicks, and maybe at Tier 10. So basically, the Bourgogne treatment!

And you know this how?

I mean...

theres the image: which shows a mirrored picture of Missouri (look at the bow, which has a backwards '63') on it.

Also the link to the dev blog doesnt actually go to the dev blog. Also if you go to the dev blog and check around the date that was posted you wont actually find it on the dev blog.

Its really not that convincing of a fake either, given the consumables loadout...

Oh and the guy ends the post with 'Thought/s', using a slash instead of an apostrophe, as in '/s' for 'sarcasm'.

EDIT: Oh and the OP of that thread admits its a fake in post 23 of the same thread...

New Jersey has never been more "popular" than she is now. Arguably, the most historically significant Iowa (fastest, longest service length, Halsey & Spruance flagship, one of two to engage enemy surface targets, only one in Vietnam, only one in Lebanon, etc). The NJ youtube channel and now that Azur Lane game have brought her into the spotlight. She also has the coolest nickname; Black Dragon (which I prefer to Big J but whatever). I'd go with a Oct 1943-May 1945 fit with the round bridge, MS21 permament camouflage. I would uptier the ship, with a weak HP pool and give it secondaries OR hydro and a MBRB or a speed boost . Either make it a Tier X american Kurfurst or Bourgogne. With Georgia, Massachusetts, and Alaska pulled they're definitely going to add an American premium ship at some point, Ohio is locked behind the RB, so why not make it a steel or coal ship.

1980's config with ciws and missles.

very unlikely as it was more land attack at that point with the reduction in the secondaries in favor of the Tomahawk missiles.

That is why I suggested the 68 New Jersey. She still had her full secondary battery, just lacked the AA.
