Just curious what you fine folks think of when you consider the best ships for operations. Its been talked about before, but not since the captain skill rework (unless I missed the thread).

I'm mostly a CA/CL main with a side order of DD. In general I've been playing whatever appropriate tier ship I'm currently grinding.

When I'm not doing that its generally the Russian or USN CL's that I play, and rotate thru them to play continuously as needed.

Nothing much changed in that regard, for me at least.

For one thing, don't pick any DD UNLESS you are very familiar with the scenario and good with the DD in question. A well played DD is a great asset to the team. Most DDs I've seen actually played in scenarios are almost worthless. It is not a good place to grind a new DD (unless you are really good).

That said, the DD needs to have decent guns. If you are just planning on torping things then you have long down times where you aren't contributing anything. You are no help with the forts in many scenarios. And very often your torp target may be dead before your torps arrive if your team is competent.

I've done OK in my Anshan with torps and guns and smoke.

EDIT: If you are really good with the scenario and a DD you will go camp on spawn points waiting for  the red ships to pop up and get torped.

Tier 6 scenarios

I do like light cruisers for some scenarios (Dallas, De Grasse). They can hide in available smoke and shoot fast, change targets fast.

Pensacola does OK. Really killer on forts.

Molotov works well for me too

Not fond of the BBs as they shoot too slow (for me) so it is almost like a DD waiting for  your torps to reload. Accuracy can be frustrating too. But that is just me.

Tier 7 scenarios

Helena is my favorite. Lotsa fast firing guns. I have found the torps on cruisers aren't as valuable in this mode because (like for the DDs mentioned above) your target is often sunk by the time your torps arrive. Torps aren't useless. On the plus side team damage is turned off so you can safely shoot anywhere.

Nelson works good too with its  16" guns and all forward gun arrangement. Do have to pick your targets 'cuz the guns fire slow.

Agree with T6 suggestions.    At T7 I'd add, especially for Op Narai ATLANTA, and FIJI to the cruisers, especially if going for the Transports to the South.    BB's I'd add NELSON and SCHARNHORST.

A bunch of ships and build styles are valid but some are more ideal for certain operations than others.

Farragut is a ferocious beast in the closer range fighting in Raptor Rescue.  Dealing with close range DDs, using islands to ambush ships as they push towards the team.  But the same Farragut in the much more wide open Aegis is a bit harder to use.  Her short range torpedoes are a liability forcing much more aggressive play that may get you in trouble.

A Tier VI IJN DD is less handy in the shorter range confines of Raptor Rescue than Farragut, but in the more open map of Aegis, they're a lot better and the longer range torpedoes with hitting power are a stronger asset, particularly in the last phases of the operation.

A Tier VI Secondary Spec BB is great for Raptor Rescue and a good part of Killer Whale, but useless in Aegis.

Tier VII - Only Operation Narai.

DDs - Anything is good except for Skane, her torpedoes completely suck.  The most important thing is torpedo power to put down BBs, i.e. Missouri before it goes in and messes the team's convoy / player ships up.

Cruisers - Light Cruisers with their faster reload speeds are a lot more flexible and are more ideal especially in going out by themselves on the North CV Route or South Transports Route optionals.  Their reload speeds let them deal with time and being outnumbered situations there.  A slow firing CA can get overwhelmed, out DPM'd, particularly in the North CV Route if they aren't careful.  I've seen slow firing CAs mess up even the South Transports Route because it took them forever to kill the Nicholas, and their slow reload allows a transport to escape, failing the Optional out there.  CLs are the easiest, best option here, more so if they have torpedoes and repair party.

IMO, the best overall CL for Narai is Fiji.  Hydro, Torpedoes, Repair Party, murderous RNCL AP shells, RNCL agility and handling.  She's a Tech Tree Ship, so she's also free.

Premium CLs Atlanta and Munchen are excellent here.  Boise / NdJ have Helena firepower, albeit shorter range and slower reload.  However, Boise / NdJ have Repair Party, which is amazing for staying power.

Battleships - Narai is BB Heaven.  Any of them will wreck face here.  California, Sinop, Colorado, Nagato, Ashitaka, Poltava, whatever.  However, due to their secondaries, the two German BBs here are highly tuned for the Operation:  Scharnhorst and Gneisenau.  The torp tubes get wrecked but the German Secondaries are easy, free damage in this Operation.  In the last parts of Narai, ships can spawn and are already close to the secondaries range of Scharn & Gneis.  Other BB Lines get pretty good secondaries range these days but they don't have Scharn & Gneis secondaries accuracy.

My go to ships for T6 operations are Leander/Pensacola. Those are the best small cruisers killing specialists in game IMO making them ideal for operations. Those are the ships I can count on in Defense of Davenport too.

I love Leander because She's a complete package. She's got British AP/smoke/torp/hydro/heal so you can manipulate bots in a number of ways. She is the least team reliant and she can solo a flank with ease in Raptor Rescue and Killer Whale.

Pensacola is my favorite too. Her ten 8" guns are almost as scary as a battleship's main battery to small cruisers but she fires with much more regularity and accuracy. Pepsi is surprisingly tough in operations. Her bow is 25mm which is the thickest among T6 cruisers so you can bow tank all day against low tier BBs.

I don't enjoy bringing any BBs in T6 scenarios because I find their guns a bit too RING-dependent for my taste, even for a Warspite.

For Narai my favorites are Scharnhorst and Nelson, I may have a new found love in Strassbourg too.

Everybody knows about Scharhorst LOL. If you put Gunther Lutjens in her and charge ahead of everyone you can get constant healing procs from the captain's talents, allowing you to do a ton of spawn-killing.

I pick Nelson simply for her amazing guns. Once I detonated Lexington AND Phoenix the moment they were spotted and I giggled so much reading comments from the two cruiser captains who volunteered the CV route.

I would personally avoid any cruisers for Narai these days. Cruisers are doing fine but the drama that comes with them..... If I announce my intention to go for either CV/trans usually 1 or 2 sometimes 3 other boats will stalk me and abandon the main objective. If I tell my team I'm staying with the group then no one else would take out either CV/transports and I got the blame later. It's just not worth the pain.

Anything Premium, anything with high DPM, extra points if it heals. TBH, unless you pick a smokeless destroyer (and are not really good playing them) every other ship works fine.

Ships that can use a repair party to heal damage are on my "short list".

Most of the time I take a BB or a CV into scenario Operations.
When I'm feeling froggy or experimental, I start taking cruisers.
DD's are my last choice, but I have sailed them in Scenario Operations.  A well-played DD can sink an opposing ship quickly with a salvo of torpedoes.  It helps if the operation has a repair-ship available.

When one is trying to earn XP & credits, sail whatever you've got.

You might enjoy Mutsu and Sharnhorst.  Each can behave like a "plus sized" DD, in the right circumstances.

Secondary battery builds are fun in Operations, too.

Good luck.  :-)
