As mentioned in the title, I was curious what skills WG recommends for your ships. So I decided to look at all the DDs and rate their effectiveness and how much they synergize with the ship. Not that you should be using WG builds anyways.

This is more of a fun analysis to see how much WG got right (and wrong), less about giving advice. Though I will offer suggestions to improve the WG builds, so probably counts anyways.

The ships are ordered by nation. If you want to find a particular ship, use ctrl + F and type the ship you want to find.

Shimakaze:

Spoiler

Shimakaze WG recommended build: Preventative Maintenance, Swift Fish, Consumables Expert, Last Stand, Fill the Tubes, Adrenaline Rush, Swift in Silence, and Concealment Expert.

Analysis: For a torpedo boat, the WG recommended build is actually quite usable. There are just a few questionable choices like Consumables Expert and lack of Survivability Expert, but those are easily fixable. Not a bad start given how much people meme on WG builds.

The only change I would recommend would trade Swift fish and Consumables Expert for Survivability Expert and some useless 1pt skill. (Shima doesn't benefit from Liquidator as she is almost guaranteed to flood BBs anyways.) Some may prefer Radio Location over Swift in Silence, but that is player preference and not an issue with the build.

Rating: Viable, usable but not the best

Harugumo:

Spoiler

Harugumo WG recommended build: Preventative Maintenance, Pyrotechnician, Last Stand, Main Battery and AA Specialist, Adrenaline Rush, Inertia Fuse for High Explosive, Survivability Expert, and Concealment Expert.

Analysis: Another usable build from WG. For some reason, WG still intends Harugumo to play similarly to objective control DDs, evident by the presence of Concealment Expert. It works for a DD support Harugumo, but is not considered the ideal build as better players just play her like a CL. Still, less experienced players will probably get better use out of CE so it’s not a bad pick.

I would recommend switching out CE for Main Battery and AA Expert (+20% AA range) and using Harugumo as a full farming DD. Superintendent is also recommended for the extra smoke, but it is not an easy decision of what 3pt skill to give up.

Rating: Viable. Could be better, but its perfectly usable

Hayate: (Premium DD)

Spoiler

Hayate WG recommended build: Preventative Maintenance, Swift Fish, Consumables Expert, Last Stand, Fill the Tubes, Adrenaline Rush, Swift in Silence, and Concealment Expert.

Analysis: Same recommended build as the torpedo boats. However, there is a slight problem of Hayate of not actually being a torpedo boat. She plays as a gunboat/hybrid, closer to Gearing and Grozovoi than Shima. Not a good idea to invest in torpedo skills as guns are the main reason you play Hayate (other than justifying your drunk purchase).

I would recommend a hybrid build. Preventative maintenance, Last Stand, Survivability expert, and Concealment expert for 1st 10 points. Next is Adrenaline Rush and Main Battery and AA specialist. Last 5 points go to what ever the player wants, like Radio location for DD hunting, Fill the tubes + swift fish for true hybrid, etc.

Rating : Very bad, but not as bad as buying Hayate instead of Smaland

Gearing

Spoiler

Gearing WG recommended build: Preventative Maintenance, Pyrotechnician, Swift Fish, Last Stand, Adrenaline Rush, Survivability Expert, Concealment Expert, and Dazzling

Analysis: Gearing is quite versatile in her builds, so it's not surprising WG has issues coming up with a good build for her. Pyrotechnician and Swift Fish are ok, but the 3pt skills are better and should be taken instead. Dazzling is also a bad fit as it provides minimal improvements and doesn't synergize with Gearing's playstyle at all. Doesn’t help Dazzle is relatively useless for a 4pt skill.

I would replace Dazzling and Swift Fish with Fill the Tubes and Main Battery and AA Specialist for a more capable hybrid build.

Rating: Questionable, needs improvement

Somers

Spoiler

Somers WG recommended build: Preventative Maintenance, Swift Fish, Consumables Expert, Last Stand, Fill the Tubes, Adrenaline Rush, Swift in Silence, and Concealment Expert.

Analysis: Same recommended build as Shima and it makes sense; both ships are heavy torp focus DDs. Again, lack of Survivability Expert raises a few questions. This time though, Consumables Expert is viable due to Somer's long US smoke lay time. Despite this, Consumables Expert is 2pts better used for Liquidator or Priority Target.

Same changes as Shima. Trade a skill for survivability expert for the occasional DD fight. RPF is also a good consideration, provided you have points to spare.

Rating: Viable, easily fixable

Khabarovsk

Spoiler

Khabarovsk WG recommended build: Grease the Gears, Preventative Maintenance, Pyrotechnicist, Main Battery and AA Specialist, Adrenaline Rush, Survivability Expert, Main Battery and AA Expert, Fearless Brawler

Analysis: WG leans towards Heal Khabarovsk due to the presence of Fearless Brawler. Already the build is questionable due to lack of Last Stand. Even Khab's engine gets knocked out frequently and not having LS nor smoke is a recipe for disaster. Lack of Superintendent is also another major issue as Khab doesn't get access to that useful 4th heal/smoke. Finally, Grease the Gears is unnecessary as 9s turret traverse is more than enough to keep up in close DD fights, something Khab should rarely do anyways.

This build needs a lot of work. For a heal Khab, I would sacrifice Main Battery and AA Specialist for Superintendent. The 4th heal is simply too useful to pass up for a small DPM increase. Last Stand is also taken instead of Pyro as open water Khab has no natural disengage tool should the engines break. Grease the Gears is not ideal, but neither are the other 1pt skills. Just take whatever 1pt skill left that makes you happy.

For a smoke Khab, I would trade Fearless Brawler for Superintendent. Also get rid of Grease the Gears. The two extra points can then be used for Last Stand or AP DD.

Rating: Questionable, needs improvements

Grozovoi

Spoiler

Grozovoi WG recommended build: Grease the Gears, Preventative Maintenance, Pyrotechnicist, Main Battery and AA Specialist, Adrenaline Rush, Survivability Expert, Main Battery and AA Expert, Fearless Brawler

Analysis: Same exact build as Khabarovsk, same exact issues. WG omitted Superintendent because apparently they think 2 smokes and heals is enough, and a 3rd smoke and heal doesn't add anything :|. Lack of Last Stand is also questionable due to the same reasons as Khab. While Grease the Gears is more useful for Groz, she still doesn’t need it and the point is better spent on other skills if possible.

Similar recommendations as Khabarovsk. I would recommend trading Main Battery and AA Specialist for Superintendent. Having an extra of every consumable is simply too powerful to pass up. Fearless Brawler is ok, but can be traded for other skills like Concealment Expert if the player is uncomfortable with open water farming. Groz should definitely pick up Last stand, probably at the cost of Pyro. Alternatively If you trade Fearless Brawler for Superintendent, then you can also dump Grease the Gears for Last Stand.

Rating: Questionable, needs improvements. How is Superintendent not recommended is beyond me.

Z-52

Spoiler

Z-52 WG recommended build: Grease the Gears, Preventative Maintenance, Swift Fish, Consumables Expert, Last Stand, Main Battery and AA Specialist, Adrenaline Rush, Survivability Expert, Concealment Expert

Analysis:  Surprisingly viable build with only a few minor issues.  Liquidator is better than Grease the Gears as it allows her torps to cause flooding through torp belts more reliably. Z-52 arguably gets more use out of Superintendent than Main Battery and AA Specialist as it synergizes better with Consumables Expert. Or she can trade Grease the Gears and Consumables Expert for a 3pt skill.

Aside from trading Grease the Gears for Liquidator, WG’s recommended build is good. You could trade Swift Fish/Consumables Expert and Grease for a 3pt skill, but that is about it.

Rating: Good (enough) build (except the random Grease the Gears)

Daring

Spoiler

Daring WG recommended build: Preventative Maintenance, Pyrotechnicist, Last Stand, Main Battery and AA Specialist, Adrenaline Rush, Survivability Expert, Concealment Expert

Analysis: Very good build. Practically the same build I would recommend to other players. Again, some players may prefer Radio Location or Priority target, but that is player preference and not an issue with the build.

I would not change anything with this build. Yes, even WG builds can be good sometimes

Rating: Good build

Kleber

Spoiler

Kleber WG recommended build: Consumables Specialist, Preventative Maintenance, Last Stand, Main Battery and AA Specialist, Adrenaline Rush, Survivability Expert, Fearless Brawler, Concealment Expert

Analysis:  Ok build aside from Concealment Expert. CE is good for ambush Kleber, but that build struggles with ambushing other ships, especially with Fearless Brawler’s concealment penalty. Consumables Specialist is also questionable as it only decreases the reload time of Main Battery Reload Booster, not useful unless you are spamming it for some weird reason. In theory it’s not bad, but the builds tries to do both ambush and gunboat at the same time with contradicting skills.

I would recommend trading CE for Main Battery and AA Expert and Consumables Expert for either Grease the Gears or Incoming Fire Alert. +20% extra range will be helpful for farming ships. Kleber can outturn her turrets in high speed turns, grease the gears will alleviate that issue.

Rating: Viable build. CE is still better for DD/CL ambush, but +20% gun range is more versatile and useful for farming.

Marceau:

Spoiler

Marceau WG recommended build: Consumables Specialist, Preventative Maintenance,  Last Stand, Main Battery and AA Specialist, Adrenaline Rush, Survivability Expert, Fearless Brawler, Concealment Expert

Analysis:  Shares the same recommended build as Kleber. Consumables Specialist makes even less sense as it only benefits DFAA, a trash consumable that doesn’t need faster reload anyways. Concealment Expert isn’t needed for the same reason as Kleber, just take the 20% gun range and farm away.

Same as Kleber. I would recommend trading CE for Main Battery and AA Expert and Consumables Expert for Incoming Fire Alert. It’s really just a 20pt build as the last point is practically useless anyways.

Rating: Viable build. Take +20% range instead of CE. Also who suggested Consumables Specialist?

Yue Yang

Spoiler

Yue Yang WG recommended build: Preventative Maintenance, Swift Fish, Consumables Expert, Last Stand, Fill the Tubes, Adrenaline Rush, Swift in Silence, and Concealment Expert.

Analysis: Same recommended build as the other torp DDs. Yue Yang can run as a torp focus DD, go gunboating with her Leg mod, or even radar counter other DDs (please don’t try this at home, you will die). Swift Fish doesn’t make much sense on Yue Yang due to her Deepwater torps already having low reaction time. While consumables expert is viable due to long smoke lay time, there are better skills available.
I would recommend trading swift fish and consumables expert for survivability expert or radio location. Yue Yang loses to almost every DD in a gunfight, so anything to avoid/survive that fight is well appreciated. Leg mod/gunboat YY can take Daring’s recommended skill set. For radar YY, take Smaland instead.

Rating: Viable torpedo build, but can use more work.

Halland

Spoiler

Halland WG recommended build: Preventative Maintenance, Swift Fish, Consumables Expert, Last Stand, Fill the Tubes, Adrenaline Rush, Swift in Silence, and Concealment Expert.

Analysis: Same recommended build as Shima, Somers, and Yue Yang. Devs apparently got lazy with skill recommendation and copypasta everything :|.  I don't think WG even looked at the ship before giving her the build.

I would scrap everything and start a new build. Preventative Maintenance/Liquidator, Last Stand, Survivability Expert, and Concealment Expert would be the first 10 points. Adrenaline Rush, Superintendent are your next core skills for 16pts total. Last 5 depends on what the player wants. Fill the Tubes + Swift Fish, Swift in Silence + Liquidator are just a few good examples to round out your build

Rating: Very bad,

Smaland

Spoiler

Smaland WG recommended build: Preventative Maintenance, Swift Fish, Consumables Expert, Last Stand, Fill the Tubes, Adrenaline Rush, Swift in Silence, and Concealment Expert.

Analysis: If you thought Halland was bad, Smaland is even worse. WG gave the generic torpedo boat build to a complete gunboat for no reason. With WG's build, you may as well be playing a 10pt captain. Probably even worse as Swift in Silence is actively gimping your guns.

WG’s build is horrible, so I recommend starting anew. For a DD killer role, just use my build except trade Dazzle for Main Battery and AA Specialist. For a general gunboat build, take Preventative Maintenance, Last Stand, Survivability Expert, Main Battery and AA Expert, Superintendent, Adrenaline Rush, Main Battery and AA Specialist, and Pyrotechnist. Your sanity and stats will thank you for it.

Rating: Very bad. By far the worst build I've seen.

Interesting trends:

-          Preventative maintenance was recommended on all builds

-          Next most common were Concealment Expert and Last Stand

-          Dazzle, Superintendent, and IFHE was only recommended once

-          Gun Feeder, Incoming Fire Alert, Priority Target, and Radio Location were never recommended

Overall, most of the recommended WG builds were at least passible. I would only recommend the Daring build without any changes, but most of the other builds only need a few modifications. However, there were some DDs with absolutely horrible skill sets, mostly the premium DDs as WG simply copy pasted their tech tree counterparts.

Found it odd several skills were never recommended, namely Radio Location and Priority Target. RL is very useful for finding/avoiding other DDs, so it's odd it's not recommended for torpedo DDs like Shimakaze. Priority target was also never recommended, though it's somewhat understandable as its very expensive as a 2pt skill. Superintendent was only recommended once, which is odd as DDs with heals benefit significantly. And SI was not even suggested for a heal DD, it was for a Daring...

While WG builds were better than I expected, obviously still I recommend looking at what other players are using. Definitely stay away from WG recommended builds for premium DDs. Though if you are going to buy a T10 premium DD, you either already did your homework and have your own build ready, or have too much money to care and will blindly copypaste whatever WG tells you is good. So the advice isn't too helpful regardless.

tl;dr: Praise the spreadsheets

  • Cool 3
  • Boring 1
  • Meh 1

The Paolo Emilio recommendations appear to have been made for a ship that plays like a Marceau :cap_wander:

The guns got pummeled with the skill changes, so buffing them up doesn't really help all that much post patch, over simply getting somewhere faster and dying in a blaze of glory.

Wow this is really good work . Maybe if you get a chance you could do one on BB s and CAs I know it's really time consuming but coming from a player of you caliber it would really help out us average players . Thanks for the write up only 4 days left till we have to set commander skills in stone . +1 for the write up !!!!

Nice write up there @Your_SAT_Score. Just a few question if I may...

Overall... After your careful evaluation... Would you say or conclud DDs (at high tiers), are better off with the new system??? Or the old system ???

Were there any major issues or concerns with the (cpt changes) alterations in game, when playing at above casual level?

  • For example... Flint Main battery gun range makes it a perfect ship for the diehard suicidal captain among us.. (Not the YOLO cpt, I mean the ones who like playing/thriving with Danger for 20 min).
    • Was there anything like that at high tiers or at your level of play ?

Again good write up and a good perspective...

NIcely done good sir... based on experience and a good hard look at what the ships can do.. very much agree with you about oth Haregumo and Hayate,   the "Gumo" I do run as the light cruiser from hell with both special and unique smoke modules for whats got to be close to the longest non US smoke in the game and the gun range punched out just as far as I can move it. As an aside she ends up getting very good AA out of it.

Hayate I have set up us a pure torp ship and run it no smoke just like I used to run my Yugumo.. she just does it all better!

Truly interesting that some of the skills in the DD branch are actually not recommended for anything. That just makes me question, whether WG does not believe in those skills and only kept them for legacy purposes, or if there is another reason.

Regarding the Daring build, my old RPF build is now 3pts more expensive than it was before 0.10.0, which really annoys me. Not only do I have to grind out 1.2M more CXP, but I don't even get back what I once had. Matter of fact, I will get less.

Nevertheless, thank you for taking the time to write this down and making it available!
