Still Possible To Effectively Use 1 Captain on 2 Classes?

So prior to skill Rework I had a Missouri 19 point captain that had a build that work great not only on Missouri, but also on my USN Premium Cruisers. Which was really nice as it would generate elite captain XP and I did not need to have as many captains. Can that still happen now or will I need to train a USN CA captain now?

( My old build was PM, EM, AR, BFT, AFT, SI, and CE so was not bad on my ships as it covered AA needs, concealment, added consumables, extra turret traverse speed, better reload, and hilariously made secondary guns deadly enough at times. So worked as great general purpose build. )

It is even easier now. So you build a captain for a tech tree ship and then build him for 3 other ship types that you have premium ships for. Or even build him for 4 premiums ships if you wanted to.

The variations in skills now will not be an issue then?

Correct because all of the skill trees per ship type are now unique. CA skills only for CA, BB only for BB etc. Each Captain can have a separate build for each ship type.

Ah so the build will auto adjust to what ever ship now then?

No, if you assigned him and set the skills for mighty mo, when you assign him to a cruiser you will need to set skills for the cruiser build. Then a dd and assign dd skills you want etc. to be clear though you can’t build a bb captain the same as a cruiser captain. Because the same skills in some cases aren’t available or have different skill point cost

Yes you put the captain on a BB and he will have the BB skill set you chose, put him on a CA he will the CA skill set you chose etc....

Just be aware it is not a good idea to do that for just tech tree ships because you will have to retrain him each time. But just like before can be put on any prem ship with no retraining needed.

So for me best practice is have a captain skilled for a specific tech tree ship and then 3 build for each ship type to be used with prem ships.

This has added a lot of value to the special Captains.

So... yes and no.

Yes because:

1) Every captain now has 4 entirely separate "pages" of skills for the 4 class of ships. 1 for battleships, another for cruisers, another for destroyers and lastly for carriers.
Rather than having 32 skills to choose from, every class of ship, every class now has 24 separate skills. Occasionally the same skill turns up for multiple classes (e.g. Concealment Expert, Priority Target, Adrenaline Rush) but the vast majority are different skills or some share the same name but are a little bit different.

Likewise if your Captain has 19pts then they have 19pts to spend on each of the 4 classes. (Note that resetting skills is currently free, but won't be when 0.10.1 hits)

2) Every captain is however only trained for one specific ship but as before you can still use them on every premium/reward ship of the same nation.

So you can have Halsey trained for Montana but also use it on any US Premium like Texas, Atlanta, Sims, Enterprise etc. When you move into said ship they will use the skills set you have for that class.

So unsurprisingly both Premium Ships and special Captains with talents and improved skills are more valuable.

However No

1) You couldn't move your Montana trained Halsey onto another tech-tree silver ship like New York, Des Moines, Fletcher or Midway without also setting Halsey to start the painful/expensive process of retraining for that ship. Previously you could move them across without changing their specialisation and the skills were only half as effective, you can no longer do this at all.

2) Large Cruisers like Alaska and PR used to do pretty well if you had the standard battleship survivability build.

However now because they are still *technically* cruisers then it will use the cruiser skill selection you have set up, regardless of whether actually the battleship build would be better for this.

Hope this helps.

The cruiser tree is not only bereft of useful skills for most cruisers after 15-16 points, but especially bad for supercruisers and light cruisers with destroyer-caliber armament. There is no fire prevention or damage control skill, and no equivalent of BFT or AFT.
