the sound on my pc seems to be dying / dead...

My computer has an i3 7100 cpu, 8 GB RAM, and it has no sound card... no video card.

Opinion on whether it's too out of date to add a sound and maybe graphics card?

Need more info.

It may be as simple as a corrupted/outdated driver.  You may just need to update your drivers.

Is it a desktop or laptop?    What is the brand/model #.   Specs??  Most desktops have some slots for expansion so you may be able to add a soundcard.  Adding a video card may be possible as well, but may depend on the size of the power supply.

It's a Dell Inspiron desktop... has an extra RAM slot, 4 slots for cards

Tried the driver fix thing... troubleshoot reloaded the drivers twice... no dice

sound starts out fine... goes softer and fuzzy within 5 min and dead soon after.

When I play World of Warships, it's in total silence... kind of a bummer on torpedo alerts and such.
