Thrilling. The US Navy needed to find out the minimum power needed for a catapult to launch an F-35C. There are two videos in the article. One from the flight deck and one from below.

With EMALS catapults it is a non-issue. With steam catapults on the Nimitz class they need to do the test at full takeoff weight with full ordnance loadout and full fuel. Pilot gotta have a lot of balls or he is going for a swim...

I was thinking that that would have been quite the way see $117.3 million of taxpayer money disappear in an instant. Glad the pilot saved it as planned.

How'd you'd like to be that pilot: Hey we're going to give you the bare minimum boost to get off the deck...maybe. Want to try it?

Probably an important number to know though.

Pilot (before getting on the plane):  "OK.  I'll try.  Here.  Hold my sign."

The launch of this S-2E Tracker ASW plane off of the Essex Class U.S.S. Ticonderoga (CV-14) carrier in 1971 is even more thrilling!

I'd no long be in need of a movement after that happened.

wouldn't that be on the Cat Officer?
I had thought that the Cat Officer was supposed to launch aircraft as the bow rose, thus preventing this.
