Hey new to destroyers and was wondering which line to go down first the aim is to get to tier 8 and see if I like the line and then go from there. Remember I have little experience in the ship class.

All of them except those with DWT...

Basically, all DDs are similar on the foundation but everything else on top of its foundation is different...

If you're gun heavy

  • Go Russian

Or a torp Ninja style

  • IJN DDs
  • Some american hybrids

For a little bit of everything

  • All other nations not stated above...

As a whole, the DD class is not "easy" to master.. Games can end on the wits on the DD player not necessarily his fire power..

A lot of the DD trees are very similar until you get to tier 7-8 although there are some differences.

The most “static” DD branch is still the US. The guns are pretty good and torps have low detectability and hit pretty hard. The US DD’s also have probably the best premium trainers as they stay pretty close to the line you’re playing  and don’t require different Capt skills to get the most out of them. They start to get fun at tier 5/6 (Mahan I hated) and continue to get better although I still prefer Fletcher(9) to Gearing(10).

IJN are the best torp boats but split at tier 7 where you choose guns or torps (Harugamo line vs Shima line).

If you like fast light cruisers then either EU, FR or RU can be played similar (run and gun).

KM is an acquired taste and there are quite a few changes in Capt skills are you progress up the line. Still love my Z-52 though and they will have the next tree split after Italian BB’s.

Good luck whichever you choose mate!

I enjoy my tier 8,9 and 10 European Destroyers and I have 401 ships in port. But theses are now the only  ones I play since the new rip off capt upgrade WG did. The tier (8) Oland has a detection of 5.8 Its trop reload is 63 sec the trop speed is 80 knots and the range is 12 Km. The tier (9) speed is 90 kts range is 13.5 km. The tier (10) trop speed is also 90 Kts and the trop range is 15 Km . The only neg thing about theses DDs  is its damage factor of about 10K or so............Note I'm using 21 point captains.........

UK DDs T7+ are very good. Smoke is fast going so it allows you to stop and farm a bit, then scoot, or allows you to hide your retreat.

It's easy to use as long as you pay attention to the smoke duration and remember that if you pop smoke at full speed, you will likely overshoot the smoke cloud and end up stopped in front of it. RN DDs have great acceleration, but decelerate normally.

I consider myself a DD main.

I have every T10 tech tree DD.

If we take into count CV rework and captain skills rework:

Pan European is hard to beat.

Tier 5, 8, 9 & 10 are stars here.

.....

With bft and aft being removed, other lines are more difficult.

Personally I still stick to the idea that the US DDs are the best introduction to the DD world. Its the only line without some kind of "gimmick", and offers a "hybrid" gameplay at T8/T9, meaning that you can choose whether you want to go towards more torpedo focused lines or gun focused lines depending on how you feel about the american boats. Benson/Fletcher/Gearing are perfect for this.

The "gimmicks" I mentioned are as followed if you're wondering about my reasoning:

IJN torpboat: Have to be really good at positioning/kiting to be able to survive against other DDs, and get torp hits due to low range, slow reload.

IJN gunboat: Torps have super long reload so rely on guns.

RN: Have to know how to use fast-recharge smoke and hydro to get in gun damage, slow ships overall, have to learn how to juke with fast accel, unreliable torps.

KMS: Crappy smokes + hella hydro, really low HE DPM, but super fast reloading torps.

French: MBRB trigger discipline, no smoke, ambush torps, resembles CA gameplay more than DD gameplay since gunboating

VMF gunboat: Long range HE spam resembles more CA gameplay more than DD gameplay

VMF torpedoboat: Why but also ognevoi has really bad DPM on everything, udaloi just kinda doesn't belong in the tree

EU: No smoke, super slow, okay guns, low dpm on everything until you get to oster/halland

PA: DW Torps, fast recharging smokes, T8-T10 have nerfed gun dpm compared to their american counterparts

edit: forgot the pan asians lol

Thanks for the info guys I tried out the german and American tier 5 and not sure I’ll try pan euro tier 5 and see which to continue on. The Americans with their really short range is hard to get around I am finding the German seems a little easier to use

But BFT and AFT were not removed for DDS.  They just have different names:  Main Battery and AA Specialist and MBAA Expert.  The MBAA Specialist improvement for gun reload was nerfed from 10% to 5% if memory serves correctly though.

Personally, I like the Benson best of all Tier 8 DDs.  Good DPM, concealment, decent torps, incredible handling and USN smoke.

For Gun DDs, do the Russian or IJN gunboat lines. For torpboats do the IJN line that starts in Mutsuki. For hybrids, do the USN line.

Uk dd's are a blast. The smoke is easier to use for me than US smoke.

It doesn't last long, but it is ready to go rather quickly.  Torpedoes and guns are very usable. The Daring and the Cossack are the ones I really enjoy.  Hydro keeps you safer.

Yes bft was nerfed by 50%.

I believe aft range modifier was lowered.

Also, the ability to add range modules  on some destroyers  also dropped....

Like Khabba, I could swear you could put range mod on it...

hello captain , I have many DD videos from all nations and would encourage you to give them a look see . I personally think IJN is the easiest to start with . They will not have the best winrate but have the least amount to focus on as you learn your craft . You mainly focus on spotting , capping and torping . Other nations have more things to think about and are great but can be overwelming as you try to learn skills without getting deleted or having no impact on the game results . My Youtube channel is Meta_Man2002 check it out if you get a chance . I believe I have 89 videos on DD play so far going over strategy , tips and tricks....good luck captain .

Benson in the US line is still the best over all "Go To" boat at tier 8.  COnsidering it's held that position through thick and thin for 5 years and change is saying quite a bit.  It does everything well but isn't super hot at anything.  I mostly play IJN but at tier 8 you have a stealthy torpedo specialist, or a sluggish, slow dakka boat that can be out turned by some BB's.   As for the rest, some are, some aren't. Your milage will very, but really Benson is likely still the best over all.
