Browsing most of the ships i have in my port, I have seen these things on the sides of many ships above the screws on the hull.

Are they just an indicator of where the screws are, or is there something more to them.

I think (from the same question in a long dead thread) they are for a better term, bumpers.  Located above the screws to keep from damaging them when you are up alongside a ship or a pier.

Basically dock guards. Only on ships where the screws stick out past the sides of the hull.

From what I've seen mentioned elsewhere, they're there to prevent the screws from hitting docks or piers when the ship is in port.

Thankfully, other's have similarly chimed-in.

What he said.  They are more noticeable on some US submarines.

Don't over think it. Whatever has been put on a ship is there for a reason. Usually very basic. Those were installed on the second ship built after the first one without it smashed up the screws docking.
