I found this movie on YOUtube... the movie itself had the full backing of the U.S. navy... I suspect they wanted to "Americanize" the captured v1 and v2 technology and secure funding for their own rockets.

Would this be allowed today? I doubt it somehow.

But seeing the Navy "playing" with this technology as shown in the movie ... its strange.

I have so many questions resulting from having watched this movie, one being "why?" ... but mainly... what were they hoping to gain with a movie where the "stars" are captured Nazi V1 and V2 rockets....

What is your opinion of this .... movie....

Its a made up story for a movie. That's All.........

That isn't the point... but never mind, if its above your head, fine.... yes, its just a made up story.... using real subs, real V1 and V2 rockets, filmed at a real navy base with the full co-operation of the Navy and Army....

a made up story.... yes.... it is... but its a lot more.... from a time when Hollywood felt poatriotic to make movies like this to get the public on their side...

But still, yes.... its a made up story.... just like all the other movies ever made....

(sigh)

The V1 missile was adopted by the U.S. military and really fired from subs in real life in the 1950s. Check it out:

Look, never mind. Forget it. I'm not going to teach you guys history... maybe you're too young... maybe you really don't know what things were like back then. Well, I'm not going to teach you.

I'll put this down to you guys being too young to understand Pre-TV and Pre-internet history and how public opinion was shaped by the Military.

MODS, CAN YOU PLEASE LOCK THIS TOPIC.... I do not wish to educate anyone at this stage in my life.

Sorry, I was under the impression that because this was posted in the "Historical Discussions and Studies" forum, that you wanted to discuss the history of the beginnings of cruise missile technology utilized by naval forces. I see now that you are looking for a discussion regarding 1950s politics and public opinion. I'll pass on that. If you would like to discuss historical technological developments, I'll be happy to participate, though. Have a good day!  :cap_like:

Read the snippet from 45 seconds to 1:28...this is what OP is referring to.

Movies don't usually get the backing of the Navy in getting their point across.

Even in movies they allow their ships in it's usually only at the concession that they are not portrayed in a bad way...but they don't usually contribute (their opinion) to the plot of the movie in any way at all.

This instance is much different than the simple statement that it's just a movie & all made up as it actually was issued as a propaganda tool.

(Haven't watched it yet...but based on that intro snippet).

In the mid 40's into the 50's,  the USN was engaged in a wide range of developments in missile technology.  Much of that matured to operational use in the mid to late 50's, some of it in the 60's.  The German developed V-1 (US manufactured ones were designated JB-2 by the USAAF and LTV-N-2 Loon by the USN along with V-2 ballistic missiles assembled most from captured parts, were widely used in testing and development because they were cheap and available.

One of the largest USN missile projects was Operation / Project Bumblebee to develop a surface-to-air missile.  The requirements were astounding in 1944 when the project started.  The missile had to be able to engage and reliably shoot down a fast aircraft at a range of 10 miles and up to 30,000 feet at that range.  That became the Talos SAM in the late 1950's that could hit targets up to 75 miles away and up to 75,000 feet altitude.

The USN started development of Bumblebee at Top Sail Island N. Carolina.  The JB-2 was tested by the USAAF at Elgin field in the Florida panhandle.

The Loon was replaced by the Regulus missile of much better design in the 50's.  But the Loon had paved the way with testing to allow the Regulus to be deployed faster.

Over in the Soviet Union they were doing much the same thing and deployed the KSShch (КСЩ) (SS-N-1 Scrubber) missile about the same time having used the V-1 in much the same way

There's way more than this to the story but it's these things that are the background for that movie.  At the time, these weapons seemed almost magical being so advanced over what people had experienced even a few short years before.

Just think, by the 60's this was not just the USN any more.  The Italian Navy cruiser Giuseppe Gibraldi  was fitted with the Terrier SAM and launch tubes for nuclear armed Polaris ballistic missiles...

70 years from now, we will realize these were also just propaganda to get funding and approval for the military's captured Transformers technology development...

'Transformers' Without the Robots Is Just Insanely High-Budget Military Porn (popularmechanics.com)

"The head of the Office of War Information was Elmer Davis who said, 'The easiest way to inject a propaganda idea into most people's minds is to let it go through the medium of an entertainment picture when they do not realize they're being propagandized,'"
