Can the Italian failure at the battle of Cape Spartivento just two weeks later be credited in large part to the raid on Taranto? (due to the very reduced number of battleships available to Italy)

Yeah that would be a big negative. The British fleet disengaged after coming under fire from Veneto and the Italian fleet followed their orders.

Not that I expect this event to be any more than a British propaganda regurgitation given other literature Lesta has put forward on the Italians.

One of the Italian BB's was torped, took out a prop and put thousands of tons of water into her. That was a mess.

Remember the Italians had speed superiority over Cunningham, however when Cunningham learned that the italian force was not doing well with speed, he chose to go closer to them.

There were a number of other issues among the italians such as not doing night fighting. That got them wrecked when the time came to be attacked at night. No radar with them either.
