Radar should be line-of-sight, blocked by islands

This ranked season makes it clear that radaring from behind the island is broken. Radar should not be magic and using it should involve some degree of risk for the cruiser. Right now radaring from behind an island completely negates DD's main advantage of concealment, which is especially painful in central objective focused maps like Arms Race and Epicenter.

Welcome to the World of Warships.
Let's see our list of 'Not in real Life' items we have here:

1) Torpedo reloads in 90 seconds...
2) Unlimited ammo in battleships, cruisers, and destroyers..
3) Hydro/Radar/Proximity can detect through islands..
4) Distances are compressed - so you will be travelling 1/10 of a KM in a second..  Think about that..  100 meters in one second.  That's like 213 MPH.
5) and the biggest 'Not Real Life' item...   They let YOU captain a military combat ship with live ammo.

Your points are about realism, I did not raise that issue at all. There is a difference between game mechanics that make sense and involve tradeoffs. We have shell dispersion, reload time and concealment value to balance the game. Sure proximity and hydro could also be LOS, but it is a secondary issue because of the much shorted range. Primary issue is radar of 10-12km range covers the objectives completely and cruisers radaring from behind an island is just too simple. 3 radar cruisers can pretty much chain radar every 30 seconds for more than half the game.

If this is a problem, then switch over to driving battleships.

They can see you anyway, and you can disembowel them with one salvo (except for the Chappy..  I still don't know how to kill that with a BB).

DD's are the already hardest class in the game, lets gimp them even more?

Both radar and hydro are simply an increase to the assured detection range which already goes through land. They would need a completely new and far more complicated system and @Vrungel there is a six second delay before other ships can use the radar information, make use of that to get to a safer location.

The real question is, "Is Radar and Hydro doing what WG wants it to?"

I'm guessing it is because WG would have changed it long ago if it wasn't.

It has nothing do do with realism, WG doesn't want DD's to have a free hand at ambushing ships with torpedoes.

DD's camping behind islands just promotes passive play, as the only way to find out ones there frequently is to go around the island and get killed by it. Only fun and engaging for the DD that camped behind the island, sucks for everything else.

Listen, if you remove the ability to work through islands you create a huge problem. Now every single island is just a DD ambush waiting to happen or a trap waiting for a DD to round and torp at point-blank range.  All you'll do is create safe heavens for DDs to hide on every map and not do anything but wait to torp enemies. This is turn keeps every ship away from the islands and pushes them to the outside of the map. It doesn't work for the game design.

What we have now is extremely simple in implementation. Now I would I like a more realistic implementation of both radar and hydro but that is unlikely.

A more realistic implementation of radar and hydro would be to slave it to the user-visability subroutine rather than the guaranteed visibility subroutine, in other words, it works just like you see in the game. This is so simple that it boggles the mind when WG says it would take an entirely different setup to make it happen, because that is complete and utter nonsense and only reveals they want it that way.

BB's are still blind, and a cruiser could have ruined your day, so, you had to work for it and take your chances. Nothing wrong with that.
