Damage upon spotting

Hi guys,

I have a silly question.

How is Damage upon spotting calculated?

I thought it was the damage your team does on a red ship while you are the closest spotting ship to the target.

After a battle where I was the only ship spotting a red BB, my spotting damage should have been equal to the full HP of the sunken BB.

To my surprise the final numbers were not that.

So, how is this calculated??

TIA

You have to be actually spotting the target when the shells hit and damage over time doesn't count (fire, flood). Also not sure how torpedo damage is calculated.

You have to not just be the closest, you have to be the only thing that can spot it.  Example:

You in a DD are moving forward, when you spot an enemy BB.

You are the only one spotting the BB.  A cruiser on your team fires at it and hits it.  You score damage upon spotting.

The enemy BB, realizing that he's spotted now and unlikely to cease being spotted anytime soon, fires his main guns.  Suddenly his spotting distance is large enough that half your team can see him.  You no longer score damage upon spotting.

And yeah, if you spot a BB, shells are in the air, and then you duck behind an island and the BB goes dark right before the shells hit, no spotting xp for you there, either.

If you really want to farm damage upon spotting, one trick to do is to "blind" your team with your smoke screen so that you can continue to be the only thing spotting the enemy.

DMG upon spotting is calculated when

  • A red ship spots you, while your teammate shots at them.
    • Some will get confused with for example, you spotting a red ship from island cover and your teammates shoot at them. This is not it.

You have to be spotting by a red ship, while your teammates fire back to give you the "DMG upon your spotting."

The best way to clear this is in a DIV with some friends...

IF you're doing it alone, pick a ship with a large detection range, following the fleet to fire upon your spotting.

I'm sorry but that is inaccurate.  To earn damage upon spotting you have to be the only one spotting the enemy.  It does not matter if the enemy is spotting you.  This is easily proven - sneaky torpedo boats like Shimakaze can rack up over 100,000 damage upon spotting scores (provided your teammates can shoot) and yet often attempt to go the whole battle without being spotted by the enemy.

Spotting and Damage on Spotting

532_ribbon_detected.png

Spotting - detecting a ship that is then damaged by your allies (that could not otherwise see the target) gives the following:

    • BB receives approximately 10% of the reward for full HP damage to the spotted ship.
    • CV receives approximately 20% of the reward for full HP damage to the spotted ship.
    • CR receives approximately 30% of the reward for full HP damage to the spotted ship.
    • DD receives approximately 40% of the reward for full HP damage to the spotted ship.
  • The spotter must be detecting the target at the moment the shells hit.
  • The reward is divided by the number of spotters.
  • Damage-over-time (fire, flood) is not rewarded to spotters.

This is a terrible game mechanic.  Damage is damage.  You spot, you get credit.  Not divided between teammates, fire should count, it is damage, etc.

I really dislike these kinds of missions.

interesting, that's a slight variation on what I had claimed.  Accordingly to that, it's not that you must be the only one to see the target, but simply that the shooter cannot see the target.  So two DDs operating in an area spotting for a battleship would both get spotting xp.

The WOWS WIKI dont mention this restriction or stipulation...Therefor, you're info is incorrect.

I only noted, the easiest way to earn DMG upon spotting in my O P.

Almost.  We recently discovered that the division of spotting damage was changed in Update 0.7.4.

Here's the latest. https://wiki.wargaming.net/en/Ship:Base_Earnings#Spotting_and_Damage_on_Spotting

That's correct.  In fact, they'd each get full damage credit done by the other-wise blind battleship.

One thing that isn't clear to me: What about radar?  Radar lights up a target and then the BB can see it.  But he couldn't see it without the radar.  Does the radar ship get credit for spotting damage?
