I would like to propose a new DD for WoWs, and not just a new DD, but a new type of DD ...... The Robert H Smith, DM-23

The Smith class of DM was built from the Sumner class of DD, and has most of her their armament: 

They do not, however, have torpedoes; instead, they have mines.

Yes, each DD would carry 80 (no, not unlimited) sea mines which could be deployed in groups of 10, with a cooldown between deployments. 

They would sit just under the surface where they could be spotted, and be effective against all surface ships and submarines at periscope depth.

The mines, once deployed, would remain in place and active until the end of the match.

Detonating a mine would not necessarily destroy a ship, but would result in significant damage and possible sinking.

Mines are not practical for this game everyone will be pink in days for all the friendly ships sinking!!

We need a Sumner-class DD as a premium. Give her Gearing's guns, slightly weaker AA, and Benson's torpedoes at T10 and it's a done deal....

I like the idea of minelayers in the game. 

However, we would have to remove team damage in order to make them more of a good addition to the game and less of an obtrusive teamkill damage farmer

Yeah, I can imagine a troll division boxing their CV in at the start of the game and the poor CV player knowing where the mines were but being completely unable to move.

Agreed

Wargaming, if you're listening, I know you want to add mines into the game. So, why not go ahead and remove team damage entirely. It would make that a whole lot easier.

We are at that point in the age of the game to "add in the Cold War;" because, Carriers and Radar have made the old game just about not playable for many with even more quitting or retiring to COOP.....

OOOH, OOOH !  (Said as Horshak would have said it in "Welcome Back Kotter")

Imagine 4 DD matches where all of the "GO" terrain is blocked !!!  Imagine the Island hiding and sniping that would create !!!  Wait, that already happens every game.........sigh.  Or, mine the reserve side of the Islands !!!! Or, those super hide positions.......

Shucks, sigh, maybe they'd be best in a stern chase and call it a day........  Of course, there's gonna be a lot of Pink players and negative karma when a DD driver has a premature Minealation early game when they get fumble fingered......and the follow on force is reading the news and answering email for the slow ride to the first Island to hide behind !  BLAM!!!  What the POCK was that !!!!  I can't wait till we get "Golden Mines" that can follow close ships.......so, close counts with magnetic proximity that could take out rudders or un-balance the screws to slow the ship down.......

That is why I mentioned a limited active timer for the mines, like Radar. Dropping mines and then have them there for the rest of the match would break the game. 

Can I get a circle pattern torp program for my Asashio torps so they can do a 1km radius circle for 20 km?

The late-generation destroyers and some cruisers are already there. Terrier BW-0 is probably the only missile whose performance is awful enough to put into the game, but even so, it'd be like putting a full-on Halland flak burst out to 10km every 30 seconds. (Note that the missile itself is slower than most shells.)

May the Schwartz bless and keep you !  HARMs would be the balance in the Force....  Why not have full seeking torps....!  After all, the game has to "go" somewhere and the Cold War is calling......

Based on the history of the actual class, they never actually deployed mines in combat and were primarily used as radar picket ships, as well as minesweepers.

 

With that in mind, I could see them having a longer lasting radar consumable, with range comparable to say the RU radar.
Good concealment, with weaker AA then the Gearing, but main battery the same.

Oh, Imagine the Alaska and Guam in the 50's with the missiles they wanted to put on them !!!  Imagine the Daisy Mae, with a split gun-missile load out.....  There do I see the Yamato, resplendent in her fourth turret that is a dedicated Harpoon and Tomahawk armored launcher.......  Oh yes, there is the future of the game......because, at the rate we are currently going, no one will be left..........because it is outright boring and predictable.

Heck, my grandson still text's me every freaking day asking if Starscream/Ise is in the game yet !  I think he believes that the Ise can transform into Starscream..........  Talk about disappointment.

Are Boomers with MIRVs far behind? WG can create a new map named Bikini.

ANYTHING is better than what we've seen these past few months.......anything.  This game should be named "World of Warship Clones".......

There is very little hope that they'll ever be "creative" or, "out-of-the-box" because they've dug a rather large hole and jumped in.  We'll see.

Minelaying is decent addition to the game if devs can get around team dmg that may result from trolling your teammates with them, I like to see Minelaying restricted to Destroyer Escort as it can give them something to do apart from solely hunt down subs. If DEs ever come to the game.

Minelaying will be very hard to implement - how often do you physically get your destroyer to an area the red team then go, especially at T10? It just doesn't happen.

Even if you did manage to pull it off, you'd end up encouraging camping even more. It seems a pretty poor addition for balance and gameplay.
