Hey guys, new to these forums. In the event I get in the CBT or when open beta releases, what should would suit my style? I tend to get in close, but be able to hit hard. Usually i would start medium to close range combat? I was thinking of Cruisers and Destroyers, and wanted to ask here. Any suggestions?

cruisers and battleships id recommend. least they can take a few hits.   i would not recommend destroyers for you because if they get sneezes at by any ship they explode. its glorious the fireworks are spectacular.

Cruisers definitely seem to be a good starting class, decent firepower, armor, range and maneuverability, Destroyers are a bit harder to play and if done wrong can be destroyed instantly.

Some cruisers can fight close up but don't make the mistake of getting too close to a BB in something like the Phoenix, you will get rekt if he lands one on you. Use your superior maneuverability to avoid his main batteries at 10k or so and keep pumping shots into him with your better ROF. Don't lose sight of what's around you, ramming a teammate or an island when engaged with one of the big boys can turn the situation decidedly in his favour.

Generally for cruisers, its 'close' - however, usually if you've been forced to engage a battleship on your own, you go to the very max of your guns range and essentially become a hard target to hit, what with your superior mobility~ But it all tends to revolve around what cruiser your in, for example, the Mogami is fantastic at the tactic I just stated. Destroyers are close up, they tend to be the fast little buggers that can and will obliterate you in one wave of torpedo's if your not careful, but you do indeed have to be cautious and smart when playing them - you need to know when to engage and when not to as cruisers like the stated Mogami can, if they just aim - even with AP loaded, just fire a single salvo and your dead.

Your playstyle will develop ingame me thinks, and not from asking on the forums as its not a clearcut answer as in all CA's do this, all CL's do this, all DD's do this, ect ect, specific ships have specific strengths and weaknesses which people seem to neglect, like the USN tier 10 Des Moines Heavy Cruiser - its insane fire rate, even with 203mm cannons - can solo a battleship at range, just got to keep moving and make yourself a hard target. Just a heads up as well, as I still see people do this, don't stop - it doesn't improve your accuracy at all, but improves the accuracy of whatevers firing at you - as they'll be able to get mostly every shell into you, while you on the other hand will have to deal with a moving target.

Be aware of your surroundings as well, I tend to see people running into Islands left and right, or outright cutting Battleships off or other Cruisers, and in some cases, doing so - gets that said battleship or cruiser destroyed. Battleships have the right of way, its easier for you to move out of the way, than them to go around you.

But I hope you eventually get in and have fun! but I'd say wait it out, its not much at the moment, until they release more trees, I'm more eager to play the Kriegsmarine, obviously!

Looks like crusiers is for you although I don't advise you go against battleships becuase they are design to destroy cruisers in WOWS thanks to the scissors, paper and stone approach. Only IJN crusier line has a chance to go one on one with battleships, they are however harder to use.

Despite what I said, I do have to agree on this matter.

The thing to remember is that this isn't WoT and the classes don't really translate. Getting close and 'hitting hard' usually means dying very soon after. Also unlike most of the vehicles in WoT the different vessels of the tech trees can offer different play. For instance some may have better AA than it's predecessor or successor while others might have more torpedoes or less but better range/more damage. Speed and maneuverability over armor or a better balance of both. You also have the differences in nations. The Japanese cruisers for example play like enhanced destroyers while the American cruisers are more closer to pocket battleships. For these reasons and for what Gneisenau said about your play style developing in game (which is absolutely true) my suggestions would not be to latch on to any one class or country but experiment and find what line and ship works best for you. I think you will enjoy the game more that way. Hope to see you out there.

Just to counter argument something, the IJN Cruisers aren't really large destroyers past the Kuma, after the Aoba - they become monsters of their own, the torpedo's are restrictive and really only useful if your making a hasty retreat because you've just been pounced upon by a DD or, god forbid, gotten to close to a battleship of similar tier. The Mogami - if used correctly can cause outright devastation when using primarily AP. I've found myself wracking Battleships and out performing Clevelands (On rare occasions of course, that ship really needs to be bumped up a few tiers.)

But indeed, unlike WoT - every ship has its own little niche in a sense, or thats how its felt for me - each ship I've played throughout the IJN and USN has felt significantly different to each other, with its own strengths and weaknesses. ( Albeit the Myoko just ... I really don't understand that ship or why it even exists in its current Tier, its so easily dealt with in an Aoba or Mogami. ) So like Cannibal4Christ has just stated and agree'd upon, don't restrict yourself to a Destroyer, or a Cruiser, or any specific nation.

For example, when I got my hands on the Kongou - I found myself delighted in the fact that I could infact use it close to a Heavy Cruiser thanks to its better mobility ( Not as good as a Cruiser, but for a Battleship, its exceedingly good. ) - so its got alot more options open to it, in terms of how you want to play and how you want to counter any threats on the opposing side. ( I honestly prefer it over the Fusou an Nagato. )

The Jist of it is, don't think of Tiers in the same manner as WoT - a Tier 6 could easily be used to contend with a Tier 8 or 9 - you just need to play smart, and use the ships strengths to your advantage depending on the situation.

I've been doing a lot of research on this; watching videos, posting on the forums, getting lots of feedback.  What I've found is that most of the input is in favor of Cruisers first followed by Battleships.  That's what I've seen. Is that necessarily true?  Maybe not, but overall I'm inclined to trust the feedback given to me by the community at large, and that's what I intend to go with.  Personal choice, of course, and based on the opinions of current users.  Make of it what you will.

If you want to beat the crap out of everything, play battleships.

If you want to miss every shot at 16+ kilometers range whilst being a shell magnet, play battleships

I see a number of heavy tank player playing battleships in the Asian server becuase they love to camp behind islands or just stop moving and shoot trusting thier superior armor to protect them and then got sunk by torpedoes. Wonder if pubs in NA are the same.

BB's try to fight long range, but end up closer in slug fests, so them or  Japanese Destroyer may suit you to start.  Good Luck!
