After the 9-11 attacks hundreds of thousands of people ran to the south end of the island where they met the water's edge. Without food or water, scared, covered in dust, some injured - they had nowhere left to run.


Then the heroes came.

the fact that no one has ever told me about this till now, or that people dont mention it more is criminal

Check out Only Plane in the Sky: an oral history of 9/11. 
 

1st has accounts of FDNY, NYPD, and others at the towers. Lots of accounts from the Pentagon that I had never heard. 
 

Also covered the boat lift. Critically injured were loaded first. Then children and women. Families were kept together. There was no central command in NYC for the first 12 hrs and essentially 24 hrs. Americans did what had to be done. EMS was waiting in NJ, Queens, Stanton Island among with taxis and city buses.
